Footie Final food
The fever has reached an all time high and foodie fanatics are breaking into a sweat!
Who to cook for? Who to root for? What would Paul the Octupus say? These are big questions people, and so we at Food24 will break it down into a ‘who’s who and what’s what’ for your convenience.
We cannot guarantee peace and safety in the kitchen, but we can offer you a fair breakdown on the World Cup Final team’s foods.
Starting off the countdown we have the orange team, the Netherlands.
The bruine bonen soep (broth with vegetables) is a traditional Dutch culinary delight! It’s especially comforting in these wintery days and is sure to warm you up from your head to your toes.
Spain on the other hand has this incredible seafood paella, Valencian paella which if you are as fanatical about mussels as I am, then this dish tops the traditional bruine bone soep anyday.
Spain 1 – Netherlands 0
Trying to remain as neutral as Switzerland here… we promise.
Next up is the Netherlands, mosselen in witte wijn (mussels in white wine). That’s a goal in anyone’s books.
Spain 1 – Netherlands 1
But then along comes another all time favourite meat, lamb. The Spanish have this delectable lamb catalan-styled dish which although takes a while is a melting pot of all things fatty and delicious. Who wouldn’t want to get stuck in a bowl of savoury goodness?
Spain 2 – Netherlands 1
The quick and easy to prepare Dutch meatballs are a leaner,’healthier’ option with a mix of herbs and spices that will leave you salivating… but then the Spanish just had to come through with their amazing estofado de carne de toro (beef with vegetables) and served with crusty, melts – like- butter Spanish country bread.
Spain 3 – Netherlands 2
This is where the really hard part comes in… the desserts.
The Dutch have either Dutch pancakes, which are plate-sized pancakes filled with just about anything or their carmelised almond cookies (speculaas) which you could quite literally nibble away at all day long.
Spain 3 – Netherlands 4
But… and here’s a big but… the Spanish have these to-die-for-will-do-anthing-you-ask-in-a-heartbeat leche frita, which are oh so sweet, fried custard slices.
Spain 4 – Netherlands 4
It’s going to have to be decided on penalties folks…
So, with tears in our eyes, and tummies growling in anticipation of the FINAL match, we ask. Who do we root for? Who do we cook for?
