Kitchen essentials that every culinary student will need
Prep for success by making sure you’ve got all these kitchen essentials sorted before you start off on any culinary adventure!
Kitchen essentials can really break or make your culinary journey, so here are a few to consider purchasing before you embark on a new culinary adventure.
The first thing you’ll need is kitchen safety shoes. Choose wisely as you’re going to be on your feet for long periods and comfy shoes that hit all the kitchen safety checks are a must.

A chef’s jacket isn’t just a formality that looks cool; it also keeps you safe from harm in a potentially dangerous environment and is definitely a part of kitchen safety that cannot be overlooked. You’ll also need a skull cap or a chef’s hat to help maintain hygiene standards in the kitchen.
A well-stocked knife bag is a real culinary life saver. Make sure you have a variety of different knifes – remember there’s a knife for every occasion! Include a standard chef’s knife, a paring knife, a boning knife and a serrated bread knife as well as a honing steel tool and a sharp pair of kitchen scissors. Be sure to label your knives – the easiest way to do this is to have them engraved. That way they’ll never “accidentally” wander off!
The next thing you’ll need is a well-packed culinary toolkit. This should include measuring utensils, a microplane zester, a vegetable peeler, a heat-safe spatula or wooden spoons, a balloon whisk, a pastry brush, cling wrap and a permanent marker (you’ll need to label things in the kitchen).
Here are a few things that aren’t mandatory but will make your culinary journey a little easier: a small digital scale, a silicone baking mat and plastic containers. Top tip: silpat mats make the best macarons and creating the perfect macaron is no mean feat!

The last things you will need are snacks and water. Yes, you’ll be around food all day but packing quick on-the-go snacks is an absolute must! They’ll help keep you fueled, hydrated and ready for the long but rewarding days ahead.
Being armed with a well-stocked culinary arsenal is key to success in the kitchen – you’ll be pushed for time and having the right tools will keep you efficient and motivated all the way through.
