It was back in 2014 when Suzelle DIY (SA’s own braai pie queen) made us roar with laughter when she accidentally let her outdoor umbrella catch alight while showing the world how to make a braai pie.
We’re not sure if it was Suzelle’s one-of-a-kind sense of humour and hilarious ‘Suzelle-isms’ (“O f*k!”…”There’s it”) that culminated in the video receiving over a million views, or the fact that South Africa had witnessed the birth of its modernized, new-age braaibroodjie. Since then, braai pies have really become a ‘thing’.
We’ve got 5 recipe variations for you to try at home (just don’t burn the umbrella please!).
Boerewors braai pie – the quintessential braai pie combining deliciously crispy puff pastry with SA’s favourite sausage.
Lamb roll braai pie – a more refined interpretation that’s served with an elegant apricot salad.
Chocolate braai pie – the hedonistic dessert that no braai lover will be able to resist!
Spinach and cheese braai pie – the veggie version, oozing with three different cheeses!
Steak and mushroom braai pie – the sexy one with deliciously juicy steak and moreish mushrooms. How can you go wrong?
A braai is not complete without the perfect side dishes. To braai or not to braai is never an option in sunny SA. But a braai isn’t truly a braai without the perfect potato bake, garlic bread or braaibroodjie. Are we right?
