Burger King launches more black burgers

In 2012, Burger King Japan first released the Premium Kuro Burger (kuro translates to “black.”)

The bun was coloured with bamboo charcoal, and the tomato sauce acquired a black hue from squid ink.

In 2013, the burger was transformed to the Kuro Ninja, which came with a slice of black bacon.

The Japanese market loves the bamboo charcoal, so it’s now used along with squid ink to colour almost the entire burger; with black pepper for flavouring to boot.

A Burger King Japan press release reported favourable reception to former limited edition Kuro burgers.

Burger King has now dreamed up the next generation black burger: the smaller Kuro Pearl consists of the burger, black cheese and sauce and the deluxe version, the Kuro Diamond comes with extra trimmings.

The latest range will be available from the 19th of September. The Kuro Pearl will go for 480 yen (+- R50) and the Kuro Diamond for +- R70.

Black buns are not new though, and have been seen before in China at McDonald’s. “Ying and yang” burgers: black burger buns with white sesame seeds, and white burger buns with black sesame seeds.

Bloggers in China maintain that the idea stems from the concept of good and evil in society. Why this needed to be illustrated by burgers may be another story; perhaps they are fresh out of ideas.
