With the opening of his Nobu at One&Only Cape Town, world-class master chef Nobuyuki 'Nobu' Matsuhisa expands his eponymous empire with the debut of his first restaurant in Africa.

No stranger to worldly culinary influences, Nobu gives classical Japanese cuisine a contemporary twist. Diners can indulge in fresh South African seafood and indigenous spices in mesmerising dishes such as Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno or the Suntory Whisky Cappuccino.

Nobu Lounge, on the restaurant's upper level, features a selection of Sakes including plum wines, Japanese beer and a creative selection of Sake and Shochu-based cocktails.

Food24 eats at... Nobu

by: Caro de Waal

An evening at Nobu is special. It’s at the One&Only for starters and I always feel a little VIP when the car is whisked off by a uniformed valet and I walk into the sparkly foyer.

Then onto Nobu which has a Japanese-style interior complete with lights made of bubbles and origami all lit up with a beautiful golden hue. You'll have to see it yourself.

The menu
We were there to have the Winter Bento Boxes.

Bento Box? What's a Bento Box? It's a really rather beautiful and clever box with different compartments for all the different dishes.
There are hot and cold sections (3 each) and have an array of sushi and salads in the cold section and hot vegetable, fish and meat dishes in the hot section.

The flavours are clean but also have a wonderful depth to them and each dish has it’s very own set of characteristics.

Dessert - Quite western in style, there was a layered, very rich, chocolatey-coffee-creamy one and then a chocolate fondant with green tea ice cream as the other.

PlusonePaul did good work on both of them and nearly popped his pants. I had a good taste of them and preferred the fondant - rich, slightly chewy on the outside with a to-die-for thick chocolate filling.

At R275 and R375 per person, it's pretty expensive as it excludes drinks so the bill could be a tad frightening for two. On the other hand it is a stunning foodie experience in a very special place.
