Two-tone tower

  • 1
    packet chocolate cake mix
  • 1
    packet vanilla cake mix
  • 5
    packets powdered cream, prepared to a thick consistency
  • 2
    containers red glace cherries, halved
  • thin custard, prepared with instant custard powder


Prepare both cake mixes according to directions on the packets and bake in two 23 cm square tins. Cool slightly, then halve each horizontally. Place the chocolate layer on a flat plate or board, cover with a quarter of the cream mixture, and top with a vanilla cake layer. Cover with another layer of cream mixture, then with halved cherries, the remaining chocolate layer, more cream mixture and finally, top with the remaining vanilla layer. Refrigerate until the cake is firm. Slice into single-serving blocks, and serve with custard flavoured with liqueur. Makes about 20 blocks.
