Ingredients (12)

YEAST
125.00 g butter — or margerine
400.00 g sugar
500.00 ml milk — boiled
500.00 ml water — boiled
2.00 eggs — beaten
10.00 g Superbake Instant Yeast
30.00 ml honey
240.00 g flour — cake
1.00 kg flour — cake or brown bread
10.00 ml salt
60.00 ml aniseed — cinnamon or naartjie zest
oil — for deep frying

Method:

Place the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl. Pour the milk and boiling water over. Stir until melted and cool to body temperature. Add the egg, yeast (dissolved in 125 ml lukewarm water) and honey. Mix. Add the cake flour and mix well. Cover and allow to rise. Add the cake flour or brown bread flour, salt and aniseed to the yeast mixture. Blend and knead for 20 minutes. Cover and leave in a warm place to rise. Punch down and roll pieces of dough into long sausages about 3 cm thick. Cut diagonally into 3 cm thick slices. Leave to rise slightly. Heat oil in a deep saucepan and deep-fry the dough slices until golden brown. Drain on paper towelling.
