Cooking times vary, so check the packet first.
As a general rule, cook white long-grained rice for 12-15 minutes, brown rice for 20-30 minutes and basmati rice for 10-15 minutes.
At the end of the cooking time, lift the lid and check that the top of the rice is dry.
Tilt the pan to see if all the water has been absorbed.
Cook for a little longer if there is still water left.
When all the water has been absorbed, the rice will be tender and the grains separate.
Remove the pan from the heat and allow to stand, covered, for 5 minutes.
Just before serving, fluff up the rice with a fork.
