Pears in white wine

    brown sugar
  • 2
    cinnamon sticks
  • 350
    semi-sweet white wine
  • 15
    grated fresh orange rind
  • 4
    pears, peeled but left whole with the stems intact

Place all the ingredients, except the pears, in a saucepan and cover. Heat slowly over low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, add the pears and simmer gently for about 30-35 minutes or until the pears are soft enough to be cut with a spoon. Cool the pears in the poaching liquid and serve with cream, if desired. Serves 2-4.
