Meat and potato stew

  • 2
    chine, cut into pieces through each joint
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 1
    large onion, sliced
  • 8
    whole cloves
  • 6
    large potatoes, diced


Place the meat in a heavy-based saucepan and add 750 ml (3 c) water. Season with salt and pepper. Add the onion and cloves and simmer for about two hours. Add more water if necessary. Add the potatoes and simmer until soft. Season with salt and pepper if necessary. Serve with freshly baked bread. (Pour some of the gravy over the bread.) Serves 6.
