Ingredients (14)

oil — for frying
1.00 onion — finely chopped
1.00 garlic — cloves, crushed
350.00 g beef mince
20.00 ml tomato paste
1.00 ml dried basil
100.00 ml wine — red
salt and freshly ground black pepper — to taste
750.00 g potatoes — peeled and cut into chunks
100.00 ml milk
1.00 eggs — yolks only
nutmeg — ground, pinch
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
125.00 ml cheddar cheese — grated

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200 ºC (400 ºF). Spray a fairly small ovenproof dish with non-stick spray.
Heat the oil in a saucepan or pan and fry the onion until tender and translucent. Add the garlic and mince and stir-fry until the mince is done. Add the tomato paste, basil and red wine.
Reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes to allow the flavours to blend. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Boil the potatoes until tender. Mash and add the milk, egg yolk and nutmeg, season with salt and black pepper to taste and mix.
Spoon half the potato mixture into the bottom of the prepared dish. Spoon the mince mixture over and spoon the remaining potato on top. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Serves 2-3.
