Croque monsieur

    mustard powder
  • 12
    thin slices white sandwich loaf, crusts removed (if desired), or country-style bread
  • 12
    thin slices cooked or smoked ham
  • 125
    Gruyère or other full-flavoured cheese, grated


1. Preheat the grill.
2. Mix the butter and mustard and spread generously on the bread slices.
3. Cover 6 slices of bread with ham, then top with remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
4. Grill until golden brown. Remove from grill and turn sandwich over. Cover ungrilled side generously with grated cheese.
5. Grill until the cheese bubbles and turns golden brown.
6. Serve immediately with straw potatoes, garnished with watercress or Italian parsley, if desired.
