Method:

Preheat the oven to 190 ºC (375 ºF). Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray. Mix the dry ingredients for the crust in a mixing bowl. Grate in the butter and rub in with fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add just enough water to form a stiff dough. Roll out on a floured surface to form a circle about 33 cm in diameter. Sprinkle the dough circle with the grated cheese and arrange the apple slices on top, sprinkling them with lemon juice. Fold about 2 cm of the edge of the dough circle over the apple slices, cover the apple slices with aluminium foil and bake for 20 minutes. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks are formed. Combine the remaining meringue ingredients and add to the egg whites by the spoonful while beating continuously. Beat until stiff peaks are formed. Spoon over the baked apples and bake for another 20 minutes or until the meringue peaks just begin to turn brown. Serve hot or cold with cream.
