There is a traditional Italian recipe, usually reserved for big family gatherings, and it’s taking over the internet. Called “timpano” or “timballo”, it is a baked layered pasta pie filled with whatever you may have lying around, plus cheese. Always plus cheese.
You take a large sheet of fresh pasta, and line the inside of an oven-proof bowl, as if baking a pie crust. The rest is really up to you – layer up tomato sauce, boiled eggs, sausages, meatballs, grated cheese, filled pasta shells and if you must – some carrots and broccoli.
Bake it all together in the oven for about 45 min. Tip it out, and bake again to get a crisp golden crust, cut into slices and serve with a little bit more cooked tomato sauce.
Can this be my next birthday cake?
