MasterChef South Africa: Episode 18

The last 3 battle it out to see who makes the final next week!

A very exciting episode that blasted to a start with the final 3, Deena, Sue-Ann and Manisha whisked off to none other than Le Quartier Francais, home of legendary chef Margot Janse.

They were to find their culinary voice by tasting a 3 course menu by superchef Margot's team.

Le Quartier Francais is one of SA’s top restaurants and has been in the San Pellegrino top 50 in the world for 7 years. Head chef Margot is a serious innovator and in the forefront of trend-setting in the food world. She has a unique style and ‘Tells a story of Southern Africa through food’’.

The nervous and star-struck contestants sat with chef Margot whilst they tasted the 3 dishes. The task?
To recreate 1 of the dishes absolutely perfectly to be judged by the MasterChef judges and Margot Janse herself.

Beetroot sponge with buchu granita and buttermilk labneh.
Quail and braised fennel with porcini, liquorice root purée and liquorice glaze.
Baobab pear parfait with salted mango gel, pistachio crumble and honey jelly

Oh my garlic, the complexity and delicacy of these dishes is amazing for 3 amateur chefs… the last straw? They were to cook their chosen dish in only 90 minutes!

I was stunned at how well the would-be chefs did, it is such a short time to cook something that is a) someone else’s dish and b) before you’ve even read the recipes and c) make 4 perfect plates!

Sue –Ann did amazingly well with the beetroot sponge, she didn’t have any backup and luck was on her side when all 4 worked… phew.

Deena managed all the components with just a bit of density in his parfait.

Unfortunately Manisha was just behind as she left off the garnish of pea shoots and her seasoning was lacking.

Manisha goes home. It is a sad day as she really has been a strong contender in this exciting race to SA’s first MasterChef!
