MasterChef SA: Down to the Final 2!

The final 2 will battle it our next week in the company of Chef Marco Pierre White!

Last night saw 2 massive challenges eliminate 2 of the final 4 contestants from the MasterChef Kitchen.

In the first challenge the contestants had to make Chef Lorraine Meaney's Cardamom, lemon and chocolate gateaux. This was not the first time the pastry chef from the Cape Grace Hotel had provided a huge hurdle for the MasterChef contestants to get over. Who could forget the disasters from season 1?

All the contestants struggled to get all the flavours to balance each other perfectly in the 3 hours they were given to make the extremely technical gateau. Ian, who managed to get the best tasting cake before the judges, unfortunately ran out of time. Had he had another 20 minutes, he would surely have won the challenge. Instead it was his turn to hang up his apron.

In the second challenge it was down to Sipho, Roxi and Philippa who were tested in a raw food challenge by the legendary Chef Margot Janse from the award-winning Le Quartier Français in Franschoek.

Sipho just could not make the mental transition to raw food and doggedly tried to “cook” parsnips in a sous-vide bath, which is set at only 47 degrees, to make parsnip purée.

Philippa, however, faltered even more disastrously with her Yellowtail Three Ways dish, as she ran out of time and didn’t get to plate all of her elements, thus securing Sipho a spot in the Final with Roxi, who knocked it out the park with her strawberry and basil dessert plate.

And what a Final it will be! Roxi and Sipho will be put through three separate challenges on one action-packed day, guided by a titan of the culinary world as a special guest: none other than culinary legend and MasterChef Professionals judge, Marco Pierre White!

Each challenge will be scored by the judges and then the winner of MasterChef South Africa Season 3 will be announced LIVE on air on Thursday, the 18th of December, as we cross live to the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg to reveal the final scores!

MasterChef South Africa is broadcast exclusively on M-Net Channel 101 every Thursday evening at 19:30, and now all the episodes of the season so far will be available via DStv Catch Up on DStv Explora!
