Breakfast of a champion: what we think Cyril Ramaphosa should eat before #SONA2019

The State of The Nation Address is a hugely important event in the South African calendar.

The City of Cape Town is preparing for the President's annual State of the Nation address, which takes place on 7 February. Roads are blockaded, the red carpet is being dusted off and the trumpeters are practising their B Flats before they belt out Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika.

But besides the usual formalities, we wonder how President Cyril Ramaphosa is preparing himself. Hopefully, his nutritionist has his back with all the necessary sustenance he needs but if not, here's what we think should be on his #SONA2019 menu for the day...

First thing's first, a hearty breakfast always gets things off to a good start! He will love these Malva pudding pancakes. Best enjoyed with a freshly brewed (strong) cup of coffee.

Tea time requires some carby goodness so a few nibbles of an amasi and cheese scone should do the trick! And because the weather forecast predicts it's going to be a scorcher in the Mother City, a big glass of Rooibos iced tea will keep the Prez nicely hydrated.

Lunchtime calls for something light but über delicious - like a pizza with braai meat and spicy chakalaka

Afternoon snacks will obvs need to be enjoyed on the go so we recommend something easily portable like chef Bertus Basson's tomato bredie samoosas. (A word of warning, Mr President: Eat these away from your security team - you won't want to share them!)

A last-minute tidbit before any big speech ensures that one's energy levels are at their peak. Nothing screams 'let's do this, South Africa!' like a mini baked bobotie cup - perfectly portioned for Cyril's lunchbox.

Lastly - once it's all over, we think he could probably do with an ice cold beer!
