WATCH: These sneakers are made from recycled chewing gum

Gum-Tec : A sneaker made from recycled chewing gum!

05 Sep 2018

The most annoying thing that can happen to you is stepping into some freshly discarded gum. Do we just walk it out?

No matter where you are you will always find bubble gum on the ground and in a bid to stop this from happening in Amsterdam, the city marketing organization  Iamsterdam, designer Explicit Wear, and sustainability company Gumdrop have collaborated in designing a shoe from recycled gum.

Gumdrop has placed little gum drops throughout Amsterdam hoping that citizens will use it to dispose their gum in – “Gumdrops are bright pink and look like strawberry flavored bubble gum bubbles, a fun, colourful replacement for the common blank eyesore of the white splodge. Once the Gumdrop is full, the whole Gumdrop along with its contents of waste gum is recycled and processed to manufacture new Gumdrops, the cycle starts again.”

They also are hoping to raise awareness of gum litter and hope this teaches people to recycle too.

“We started looking for a way to make people aware of this problem [...] That’s when the idea began to create a product people actually want from something no one cares about,” a spokesperson for the collaboration, Jonathan Van Loon, said in an email to The Verge.
