Frankies sodas

So there’s a bit of a furore flying around on Twitter – just before Christmas nogal – over the fact that Woolworths may or may not have copied a very funky cooldrink that hails from KwaZulu Natal.

According to their website Frankies is  a “micro” soft drink business that is reproducing some of the favourite soft drink tastes of yesteryear and already has a range of luxury soft drinks, which includes Homemade Ginger Beer, Olde Style Root Beer, Original Cream Soda, Cloudy Lemonade and Cinnamon Cola. Their online shop enables you to have the Frankies Soft Drink range delivered to your door.

Fake Frankies?

Now the story goes that Frankies approached Woolworths SA about a year ago to stock their product. Woolwoorths said nah ah… and a year later they have their own retro-drink range on the shelves.

Woolies have issued a statement on their facebook page – claiming that “Retro is not a new concept. It has been a trend locally and internationally in clothing, food and packaging for some time. We have used vintage design for many years in products ranging from blouses to fudge and drinks. Flavours such as cream soda, ginger beer and cola have been widely used internationally for decades."
