Lavazza Coffee: 2009 Calendar
Lavazza Coffee, the market leader in premium coffee, hosted its annual calendar launch in Rome, celebrating the Calendar’s 17th edition.
The style of the calendar theme, The Italian Espresso Experience, is sophisticated and elegant and takes the viewer on a surreal journey into Italian culture, past and present.
Photographed by the inimitable, Annie Leibovitz, each calendar photograph underscores the beauty and passion associated with Italy.
Leibovitz’ classic ‘tongue in cheek’ approach to her subjects is evident in the calendar photographs. This is depicted in ‘Lupa’, where she inverts the Roman emblem of the wolf with Romulus and Remus, by presenting a women wearing wolf fur with the ‘twins’ underneath her.
Lupa
The photograph ‘Il cinema’, a tribute to the great master of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini. Here, Leibovitz took her inspiration from the iconic scene in La Dolce Vita, which made the Trevi Fountain a household name.
Il cinema
Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man is also redefined by Leibovitz in her photograph ‘Genio’, set against the background of the Colosseum – where she replaces the male form with a female equivalent – using the outline of the coffee cup to complete the inversion of this popular icon.
Genio
The calendar is a culmination of everything which represents Lavazza Coffee – passion, creativity, inspiration and a flair for the dramatic. At the same time Annie Leibovitz reminds us that true irony means never taking anything too seriously.
