3 things to do with... watermelon

Nothing says summer quite like a red slice of watermelon. Try these refreshing recipes.

I grew up with watermelon from the Karoo. Those watermelons were always the sweetest and crispest. They were long and paler-skinned that what I see in the Cape's shops. My dad reckons it is the lack of water and the heat from the sun that somehow transformed their insides to bright red goodness

My favourite way to eat watermelon has always been to butter really warm fresh bread and put slices of pipped watermelon on top... But I won't say no to Jan Tripepi's Watermelon and chevin salad with a vodka dressing either.

Looking for something new to do with watermelon? Try these recipes.

1. Watermelon braai salad
The creamy saltiness of feta and the pepperiness of rocket go so well in this salad.

2. Quick watermelon sorbet
A great way to use up excess watermelon. Spike with vodka for a grown-up treat.

3. Roasted watermelon with peri-peri ice cream

You either love or loath warm fruit. But if you do, then this exotic dessert is great for a braai.
