See the biggest, jaw-dropping elephant cake in the world at the Good Food & Wine Show

25 May 2017

Remember last year when we posted a video of the biggest rhino cake ever made? Well this year, the folks at the Good Food & Wine Show will be doing it again – except this time, you’ll get to see an elephant cake that took a staggering 250 hours to design and make.

Who has that kind of time?
Wellington based cake maker Dot Klerck honed her skills in art and sculpture before falling head over heels into the sugar world. Now an award-winning 3D sculpted cake artist, Dot teaches at sugar schools all over the globe sharing her knowledge and passion. She is the maestro behind #thebiggestelephantcakeintheworld which she says is the biggest cake she’s ever made and you can see with your very own eyes at the Good Food & Wine Show in Cape Town from 2 – 4 June.

Why an elephant?
The Elephant Project SA is an initiative to make the biggest elephant cake in the world to raise awareness of the threats to elephants from poaching and illegal wildlife trade. This project follows on a similar project last year in which a giant rhino cake was made to highlight the plight of rhinos. Funds raised will be donated to International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

But back to the cake...
“We will be using large 40x40cm sheets of cake to create the cake. These will be placed on top and next to each other and carved to shape. Every 20cm of cake, we will need to put supports in, so that the bottom layers of cake are not squished!” says Dot who also points out that because of the cake’s weight (it will weigh a ton!), a forklift will be needed to transport the chocolate flavoured sponge.

Let’s look at the stats
