Had the best meal in ages. What a fantasy for the taste buds! So many suprises from the bread that was served to the frothy prawn soup in an expresso cup to the sweet delights that arrive with your bill- all compliments of the chef. Had the trotter parcel as a starter in a delicate lite phyllo pastry and then as a main beef cheeks in tortellini. Flavours you cannot imagine but just have to try! Thought their al carte menu was expensive but after the attention to detail and the flavours experienced I will definelty be back to try the rest of the menu, the experience is worth every cent. And to top it you can get very good wines for under R100 red or white so your evening out won't be that expensive.

My husband and I again revisited Terroir and this time took advantage of their winter special menu. Special it was with all courses being top class and most flavoursome. We can thoroughly recommend this restaurant of restaurants and will certainly be back.

Is there anything to beat sitting outside a beautiful restaurant on a sunny winter's day with good friends, great wine and outstanding food? I think not and lunch at Terroir yesterday was perfect. The R150 two course menu is fabulous but I highly recommend distracting yourself with the normal dessert menu and trying the cheesecake with berry sorbet for dessert. Lovely pig trotter parcel, unbelievably good seafood ragout and very decent portion of steak with good bearnaise. One of the nicest things - and something I really didn't expect - was how fantastic they were with the young children in our party, providing beautifully-cooked kids food and generally being very relaxed about little crawlers, small runners and sometimes slightly noisy shouters amongst our party (we sent them to the jungle gym as quickly as possible!). Truly a lovely Sunday lunch and one I cannot wait to repeat. Many thanks.

I went for a dinner at Terrior, Kleine Zalze, Stellenbosch. Besides the restaurant's relaxing atmphosfeer... I had for main a grilled piece of fillet served with Foie Gras on top... I almost fainted when I took the first bite... served with seasonal garden greens... The BEST BEST BEST steak I have ever had, I can recommend it!!! - Suzanne

Absolutely outstanding!! The setting was amazing the service wonderful but the food is award winning!!! We had the winter special - Pig's trotters to start fantastic followed by the line fish which was Kabeljou......yum!! At R150 for 2 courses for the quality of food you get it was really not over priced at all. Jules x

Once again we (and our visitors) were not disappointed with the superb service and excellent cuisine at Terrior. The sumptuous sauces and the detail to each dish make this restaurant an outstanding experience and well worth a visit. Keep it up Michael Broughton!

This Green Season, I invite you to Terroir to enjoy our hugely popular Green Season Specials menu, available at lunch and dinner from 12 April – 30 September 2010.

It offers a pared-down, simpler and therefore also more affordable take on the classic Terroir style for which we have become well known. Every day there will be three starters, three mains, a couple of desserts and a cheese board from which to choose either two or three courses.

On the cards are parsnip soup with vanilla and tarragon; mussel soup with saffron and garlic croutons; and linefish with a miso glaze and brown butter and lime vinaigrette. For dessert, cold vanilla rice pudding with hot poached pears, roasted walnuts and maple syrup or a decadent rum baba with pistachio anglaise.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Green Season Specials menu:
2 course menu for R165 per person
3 course menu for R195 per person

The Green Season Specials Menu is available from 12 April to 30 September 2010 for lunch and dinner, Monday – Saturday (excluding Sundays). Lunch from 12h00 to 14h30, dinner from 19h00 to 21h30.

Food24 eats at... Terroir

As soon as this invite came into the office, I snatched it. I’ve never eaten at Terroir, but have always wanted to, given that everyone who does returns with tales of deliciousness. I can now confirm that these reports are true... both the food (in this case, the very reasonably priced Autumn menu) and Michael Broughton the chef are, indeed, delicious.

The setting
It doesn’t hurt to have Kleine Zalze as your backdrop, does it? I was surprised by the rustic quality of the restaurant though; I had imagined a much schmancier, shinier place - not sure why; in fact it’s perfectly ‘earthy’.  The slightly laidback feel made me instantly at home, and once I had spotted the chalkboards, I was positively relaxed. I do like a chalkboard menu, me.

My lunch company – Graham Howe, Kim Maxwell, Carolyn Frost and Lise Manley – were warm and interesting, which, of course, raised the entire meal up a notch.

The food
It’s not a fluke that Michael is Albert Roux’s favourite SA chef. Some of us cook, some construct, and others just make flavours sing. A parsnip and vanilla soup, some gnocchi with a Gorgonzola and Grappa sauce, confit duck, mizo-glazed fish (sous vide), sirloin on pearl barley risotto... I’m telling you, even without the best sticky pudding of my life, if you’d leant in close, you’d have noticed I was purring.

It’s also worth mentioning that Michael is responsible for Chef Caro’s favourite meal of all time, an oxtail risotto. Me? Funnily, that gorgeous little soup hasn’t left me.

The wine
While Kleine Zalze is best known for its Chenins, our wine Editor Cathy tells me they also make a lovely dry rosé made interestingly enough from Gamay Noir and some elegant reds. Their whites are are also very good value at the bottom end, so stock up your trolleys.

Their Wine Ambassadors campaign also sounds quite fun - so check that out.

Price range
The autumn special is a goodie – R165 for two courses and R195 for three.

Perfect for
Most occasions. If I had to pick one, I’d say an impressive first date. Well, it would impress ME.

Karibu "Karibu is one of my favourite restaurants to pop in for a dinner that never disappoints. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed with a distinct South African feel that's both elegant and upmarket. The service is friendly and efficient - I always rely on the manager (Bruce) for meal recommendations which thus far has been spot-on, yet I'm sure the menu as a whole is good......"
