Terroir at Kleine Zalze

Kleine Zalze Wine Estate
Techno Park turn off, Strand Road (R44)

Stellenbosch
Western Cape

Terroir opened in October 2004, and over the years has become one of the most sought-after gourmet destinations in the Cape winelands, placing Stellenbosch prominently on the culinary map.

The restaurant is located on Kleine Zalze, a family owned wine farm that has risen to prominence both in South Africa and internationally thanks in particular to its award-winning chenin blanc and shiraz. The setting, under historic oak trees with views over the De Zalze golf course and surrounding gardens and vineyards, is both refined and relaxed. It’s the perfect environment in which to enjoy a fine meal matched to excellent wines.

The unpretentious ambience and dressed-down décor belie multi award-winning chef Michael Broughton’s rigorously disciplined approach to food. Classic pairings and intense depth of flavour characterize the chalkboard menu of ‘deceptively simple’ dishes influenced by what’s in season and, where possible, the use of locally grown fresh produce. Care and emphasis is placed on matching the food to specific wines produced at Kleine Zalze, in the Stellenbosch region and further afield.

Terroir’s ongoing success has brought with it a string of prestigious awards, including the Eat Out Johnny Walker ‘Restaurant of the Year 2006’, Eat Out ‘Service Excellence Award 2006’, Eat Out ‘Top 10 Restaurant’ 2005 and 2006, Dine (Wine magazine) ‘Top 10 Restaurant’ in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and Best of Wine Capitals of the World South African Wine Tourism Restaurant of the Year 2006.

terroir winter menu

Where: Terroir Restaurant

When:
now until 30 September 2012

Cost: R175 for 2-courses, R198 for 3-courses (including a glass of wine)

The upcoming months in the Cape call for modern comfort food and satisfyingly earthy flavours. With an inviting fireplace and warm, knowledgeable service, Terroir situated on the Kleine Zalze estate offers foodies that rare thing in winter: a real deal.

Regulars and newcomers to this award-winning restaurant can take advantage of Michael Broughton’s Winter Special menu featuring the likes of seared salmon on Puy lentils with Thai green curry flavours and bacon foam or tempura-style caramel and ginger calamari with yuzu mayo, spicy tomato jam and fresh pea shoots.

The mains, including a classic beef fillet with all the trimmings, are deliciously generous while desserts such as baked banana savarin with white chocolate ice cream, cherry coulis and pistachio are suitably decadent without being too sweet.

Offered from Monday to Saturday at lunch and dinner, the winter special is available from now until the end of September.

‘Winter brings a welcome change of pace and, of course, a different style of cooking – everybody in the kitchen loves it,’ says Michael Broughton. 'Our Winter Special is aimed at our loyal local following and is also there to encourage people to experience the restaurant for the first time'.

The Winter Special includes a choice of three starters, three mains, two desserts and a cheese board, with dishes changing according to seasonal availability of ingredients.

Unlike the rising price of petrol, the price of the menu will delight anyone who appreciates quality and value for money. Two courses costs only R175, three courses costs a reasonable R198. Both deals include a complimentary glass of award-winning Kleine Zalze wine.

The Winter Special is in no way a dumbed-down version of Terroir’s signature a la carte chalkboard menu that is available throughout the year.

The special may be ordered by tables of eight or less guests, and is available from now until 30 September 2012 from Monday to Saturday at lunch and dinner (excludes Sunday lunch).

Hot diggidy, doesn't this sound good?!

Update: Terrior will be taking their annual winter break. Open dates are as follows:

* Monday 25 June – Monday 9 July closed
* Tuesday 10 July – Friday 13 July open for dinner only
* Saturday 14 July – open for lunch and dinner
* Sunday 15 July – open for lunch
* Monday 16 July – Closed

Food24 eats at... Terroir

Terroir has thrilled my taste buds once again and remains as delicious as ever.

The setting
Set on Kleine Zalze wine estate in Stellenbosch, Terroir is an unpretentious restaurant with a dappled shade outside area for relaxed yet chic country dining.

The food
It is one of my favourite restaurants in the Cape and I was there to try a few dishes off the Winter menu.

It's a pared-down menu that is extremely affordable. I mean, 2 courses costs R175, 3 courses R198 and both deals include a glass of Kleine Zalze wine? That's a real deal at one of the top restaurants in SA.

Take a gawk at what I ate (every delicious bite!) in this lush gallery.

Michael Broughton is the sauce King in my mind and I love that his food is so interesting, beautiful and not too overly-fussed with.

The wine
Award-winning wines at reasonable prices. In the words of our wine guru, Cathy Marston, 'Delicious! Excellent value at a lot of different price levels from entry to really very good indeed. Particularly love the Chenin Blancs although in recent months, it is their Cabernet Sauvignon which has been winning all the plaudits and gathering all the fans.'

Perfect for
Get some friends together for a lovely long lunch or a special meal with your partner, you can't go wrong.

*The Winter Special may be ordered by tables of eight or less guests, and is available from now until 30 September 2012 from Monday to Saturday at lunch and dinner (excludes Sunday lunch).
