We were directed to Societi Brasserie us a special place for our 4th Wedding Anniversary. I already loved their ethos of artisanal and locally sourced seasonal products and I was really wowed when we walked in – the staff were friendly and the place is fabulously slightly rustic French OTT and very convivial. I loved it on sight, especially the very generous servings of excellent “by the glass” sparkling wines and wine. Which means I was even more than normally devastated by the below par food – really stodgy mini cheesy calzones, flavourless French onion soup – o where was my tangy onion broth with generous bubbling melted cheese on crispy going soft croutons? The pork neck was very stringy and tough with which ruined the fabulous creamy sauce it came in, and the steak was so forgettable I can’t remember. Judging by the site and number of dishes going out, I would say the battered hake is the dish to order, but don’t set your heart on the hand cut fries – o too disappointing yet again. My other small gripe was the toilet, it really does say something about a restaurant, and Societi Brasserie’s are not great – very cheaply done and slightly mucky

Since the Society Group open their Brassiere in Tokai over a year ago, it has become our favourite casual restaurant. The décor is strikingly elegant yet casual giving that rich-hippy feel. The menu is shortish, diverse and we could always find something interesting on it. Portions are substantial, which I particularly like. The kitchen is talented, the wine list good with very drinkable by-the-glass options available. They serve a nice list of craft beer and their dessert wine and brandy list is quite a surprise. The best by far is their Lunch Club special (R68) that includes a glass of wine. Again, interesting variety, well prepared and substantial portions.. I enjoy their omelettes and the pastas are good too. In my opinion, one of the better value-for-money specials in town.

Had an unfortunate experience for a friend's birthday dinner. The service was incredibly slow (mains took around an hour to arrive, after three attempts to find out what had happened to the food). The explanation was "we have a very big table downstairs and all their orders have just gone through". Since the restaurant was not even vaguely near capacity on a weekday night, this is quite worrying! Although my duck was delicious, the majority of the food that arrived was lukewarm, the spinach side was heavily over-salted, and the white wine by the glass was at room temperature. Extremely sloppy and disappointing considering the price of many of the mains. We won't be returning, considering there are many other good dining options in the area (Constantia Uitsig is just down the road, and we can be guaranteed excellent service, seasoning and punctuality there).

Had dinner at The Brasserie last night with 3 other couples. The place was very busy and the atmosphere was great. Myself and my mates had their artisinal beer of the month-A pumpkin ale!! The food was amazing and everyone raved-the fresh mussels and bone marrow were the most popular starters & the Jack black hake and the Carbanara pasta were amazing main courses. We all had dessert and the creme brulee was a hit. Service very efficient, considering how busy they were. Def. be back soon!

I live in Newlands and recently went to the Josephine's cookhouse-the best pizza, pasta and rib eye steak we have EVER had. Anyway, they also own the Societi Bistro & Brasserie. Had some friends meet me at the Brasserie in Steenberg, WOW! They were absolutly jam packed, we had to wait at the bar for an hour, but the barmen was fantastic and made us try some awesome hand crafted cocktails! We actually had our starters at the bar and then eventually moved to a cozy table-this was at 9:30 and the place was still rocking. Food took a little long, but well worth the wait. Awesome fillet steak and the fresh mussels were well presented and sooo fresh, cheesecake incredible and the best creme brulee in Cape town. Service great and friendly, esp. considering how busy they were. 10/10- OUTSTANDING! I will certainly try the Bistro next!
