From the very few that remain of the 110 Italians that crossed the ocean over 50 years ago in search of adventure on what was then the South African Railways network, and stayed to do their bit in changing the restaurant scene in South Africa, Bernardo Napoli surely is a Pioneer.

The “REAL DEAL” of tradition Italian food, chef Bernardo “Papa” personally makes all his own pasta’s and also provides you with a wood burning oven pizza you will never forget. Inventive and passionate about food he is able to cater for all your requirements and regularly creates special dishes to tantalise your taste buds. “You want – I cook for you – in front of you – no imitation – Capice!”

Packed with atmosphere and bulging with detail in true Trattoria style, you will feel as if you are sitting in Italy in this cosy and intimate restaurant. Soccer shirts & banners, family photo’s, 60 years old newspapers and flags of the world line the walls. Chianti, Grappa and Limoncello bottles hang alongside Salami’s, cheeses, garlic’s and hams, which dangle seductively over an open plan stove and wood burning pizza oven.

The aroma of chef Bernardo cooking with the freshest ingredients in front of his customers adds to this unforgettable ambiance and dining experience.

Pioneers of Italian food in South Africa and with over 50 years experience, “La Familia Napoli” are renowned restaurateurs and invite you to come enjoy their love of food, and indulge you in an unforgettable experience in the tradition of Italy.

I think this restaurant is really Italian, as you can and must expect them to be. If you expect fancy restaurants standard your expectations will not be met. I found quality and price in good balance. The admosphere is truly Italian and should be appreciated as such. Otherwise do not go.

Trattoria Napoli - (Fish Hoek) A distant glimpse of Italy An evening of mixed emotions with a distant glimpse of Italy. An establishment that has graced the pavements of Fish Hoek for the last 20 Years. The decor and various items that adorn the walls, ceilings, tables, windows and just about every possible square inch of this trattoria pays tribute to its lengthy stay in the Valley. From the genuine twenty plus year old laminated news clipping / table mats to some rather bizarre Italian sculpture / soccer shorts. A signed Maradona shirt from Argentina's heyday and an abundance of footballing paraphernalia decorate the majority of the ceiling square meterage. First impressions do count. The waitress in attendance although polite was not quite with the menu programme.Questions pertaining to simplistic items on the limited menu were best left unanswered.I do believe in a condensed menu, less is more concept, however in this case less was well, just less.In theory the menu consists of pizza, a few pasta dishes and when available a few ice cream desserts. Please do not enquire as to the availability of any starters (antipasto) as these are 'Only available and worthy items on the European restaurant circuit'. Accordingly, South Africans or Fish Hoek residents have yet to grasp and or embrace the concept of starters. Drinks were delivered and orders were placed, minus any starters. An order of pizza ( basic, ham, feta and avo) and a lasagne dish went off to the kitchen.A lasagne and pizza reappeared albeit minus the avo. This basic pizza filling was later served well coated with vinegar on a side plate, presumably as a self add item. The pizza, with avo was reasonable. The accompanying dish of Lasagne, was according to the recipient very 'homemade' and enjoyable. Skipping the dessert menu, we moved on to the highlight of the evening, the espresso shots. Unfortunately more issues were still to be resolved. The bill total including the tip was filled out and presented for payment. The tip amount was then added to the total once again. All issues regarding this oversight were amicably resolved and the overcharge refunded. In summary. A very interesting / different Trattoria to visit. Embrace the history and view all the random memorabilia. Indulge in some home style pasta, good espresso and savour the delightful Italian music. MRG
