From the very few that remain of the 110 Italians that crossed the ocean over 50 years ago in search of adventure on what was then the South African Railways network, and stayed to do their bit in changing the restaurant scene in South Africa, Bernardo Napoli surely is a Pioneer.

The “REAL DEAL” of tradition Italian food, chef Bernardo “Papa” personally makes all his own pasta’s and also provides you with a wood burning oven pizza you will never forget. Inventive and passionate about food he is able to cater for all your requirements and regularly creates special dishes to tantalise your taste buds. “You want – I cook for you – in front of you – no imitation – Capice!”

Packed with atmosphere and bulging with detail in true Trattoria style, you will feel as if you are sitting in Italy in this cosy and intimate restaurant. Soccer shirts & banners, family photo’s, 60 years old newspapers and flags of the world line the walls. Chianti, Grappa and Limoncello bottles hang alongside salami’s, cheeses, garlic’s and hams, which dangle seductively over an open plan stove and wood burning pizza oven.

The aroma of chef Bernardo cooking with the freshest ingredients in front of his customers adds to this unforgettable ambiance and dining experience.

Pioneers of Italian food in South Africa and with over 50 years experience, “La Familia Napoli” are renowned restaurateurs and invite you to come enjoy their love of food, and indulge you in an unforgettable experience in the tradition of Italy.

"Papa" pf whatever the owner's name is, should never run or own a restaurant. Rude, ignorant and OBVIOUSLY eating way to much( if I look at his round figure)Go anywhere else except here! waste of time and money

I have never felt so incensed and insulted in my life!!! The owner is certainly one of the rudest and most crude business person I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Surely, it is the prerogative of the prospective PAYING customer to take their time when deciding to order food off a menu which they are not familiar with? I was told to stop wasting his time and rather go to Scooters across the road. Me, being justifiably indignant, told him that he was a disgrace to the hospitality industry. While stuffing his over endowed, greasy lips with food, he told me South Africans were rubbish and I was a "sheet" and that I must leave his restaurant. I need to expose this crass bigoted Italian who's probably earned millions off the "rubbish South Africans". He said I must go ahead as it will make his eatery more famous.

I find this discussion interesting because there is always a view that the restaurant is authentic only if the restaurant has an Italian owner.Just like cricket that originated in England Italian food originated in Italy. Does it mean no one else can make that style of food better than an Italian. Mmmmmm Maybe the English cricket team has already answered that question.

@Arty. What a load of crap.Restauranteurs in Italy would not dream of telling their customers what to eat. At most they will recommend. To say that this is the way its done in Italy shows the ignorance of someone who's experience of the country is probably gleaned from a badly researched wikipedia and whos idea of " eating out " is a braai in the back yard.Customers in Italy would give back as good as they get and would walk out. Of course, they do have the occasional idiot....as we do here

If you're one of those poncy mincing metro males or caked-on makeup city snobs looking for cordon bleu and silver service then you're too stupid and don't deserve to sit at an authentic Italian restaurant. The owner shouts, waves his arms about and tells you what you should be eating (do not order a cappuccino during the day or before your meal!) because he is a dinkum Italian. Go with the flow, enjoy his character (which is like a tornado in a porcelain store) and accept that the food he makes is the REAL thing - not some fast food ripoff of proper Italian food - so if you don't like it, then you should never visit Italy because that's how they do it there. Bad reviews can only come from morons without a sense of adventure let alone a sense of humour. We will be going back, many times for the great food and laughter!

For me this is a beautiful and pleasant Restaurant and as other have mentioned the owner/manager Bernardo is a superb host with great insights into Italian cooking and fascinating tales of the origins of some of the dishes. He is also keen on passing on his skills to his cooking staff a generous quality. Try Napoli-Trattoria for a little Italy flavour in Africa.

I have been there twice in the last week and both times the food was simply outstanding. The last time, on my own, the owner and hands on Italian manager 77yr old Bernardo, invited me to his table, where I ordered what turned out to be probably the most delicious putanesca pasta I've ever had. Bernardo takes pride, the food is authentic Italian, and he barks at his staff all the time to keep it good. Do yourself a favour and look beyond some admittedly shabby decor and don't miss it!
