Gabriëlskloof is the realisation of a dream for businessman Bernhard Heyns, who searched for several years to find the unique piece of land that would capture his heart – and enable him to grow vines and make his own wines.
By chance, local farmer Barry Anderson heard about Bernhard’s quest and arranged to meet him on a windy summer’s day at a farm just outside Bot River on the Swartrivier road. They both saw incredible potential in this piece of land, at the time covered with wheat and canola, and home to a few wandering sheep. The decision to buy came easily – in 2001, Bernhard became the owner of the farm Avontuur, soon to be renamed for its original owner in 1860, Gabriël le Roux.
After carefully matching cultivars and terroir, the first vines were planted in 2002 and in 2009 award-winning winemaker Kobie Viljoen joined the team to make the debut vintage.twitter: @GabrielskloofOpen:
