Gabriëlskloof is the realisation of a dream for businessman Bernhard Heyns, who searched for several years to find the unique piece of land that would capture his heart – and enable him to grow vines and make his own wines.

By chance, local farmer Barry Anderson heard about Bernhard’s quest and arranged to meet him on a windy summer’s day at a farm just outside Bot River on the Swartrivier road. They both saw incredible potential in this piece of land, at the time covered with wheat and canola, and home to a few wandering sheep. The decision to buy came easily – in 2001, Bernhard became the owner of the farm Avontuur, soon to be renamed for its original owner in 1860, Gabriël le Roux.

After carefully matching cultivars and terroir, the first vines were planted in 2002 and in 2009 award-winning winemaker Kobie Viljoen joined the team to make the debut vintage.

@Michelle - cannot agree with you more. We went there last Saturday for lunch. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and every person that was there was treated to a sample of the duck liver pate - delish. Also spent tons in the deli ...

If you are travelling between Cape Town and Caledon (or Hermanus) or if you are just an avid day tripper (like us) you must treat yourself to lunch at Gabrielskloof. This hill top venue is stunning and run by a very talented and dedicated couple. Frans is an amazing chef and delights in offering mouth-watering treats that will ensure you return again and again. The deli is well-stocked and so temptingly displayed that you will leave with an armload of goodies to remind you of the great food experience. An absolute gem.
