On the 21st of April I made a reservation enquiry via email at DW eleven-13. I received a reply on the 22nd in the morning from a lady named Monika. She said the restaurant was full for the 23rd but that she would keep my name on the waiting list. I had requested for a table for 10 people (she said the restaurant was fully booked to capacity of 75). On the 22nd about 2 hours later Monika sent me an email informing me that the grazing room was available and that my party of 10 could use the room. I informed her that we would be celebrating a friend’s birthday and that she could make the booking. At no point during our interaction on email did she inform me that the grazing rooms was separate from the restaurant and that if you sue the grazing room you cant order from the menu of the restaurant. - she even went as far as to tell me that max capacity for restaurant is 75 people. On the evening of the dinner we were shown to the grazing once all the guests had arrived. Once in the grazing room we asked for the restaurant menu as the only menus we had on the table were the tapas menus. At this point we were informed that we couldn’t order from the restaurant menu if were are in the grazing room. The man who spoke to us was adamant that the kitchen could not make extra food for us as we are only allowed to order from the tapas room. He even went as far as saying the grazing room is not part of DW eleven-13 and that their restaurant caters for 65 people. We informed him about the email between Monika and myself and even told him that she said the restaurant takes 75 people. He was not interested in helping us at all. He said the restaurant was full and they couldn't accommodate us at all (he didn't even want to hear what we would order from the menu). He called the chef who also came out with a negative attitude -soon as he got to the table he said I'm sorry I cant help you before he could even hear the whole story. Needless to say we were thoroughly annoyed at this inflexibility and informed them that we would leave- they didn’t even bat an eyelid. They just said there is nothing they can do. We would have loved to support this restaurant, but alas I guess our money was not good enough. When we left the restaurant there were only about 20 people (we counted). The other 45 people which the chef claims would be there by 8 pm had not arrived and we could have put in our order and been done before 8 pm as we were seated at 6:30 pm. I am disappointed with the sheer lack of customer service at DW eleven-13. In one night they managed to lose business from 10 customers who are now going to tell about 1000 other people on social networks about this incident.... I personally will never set foot in this place again and I can promise you anyone I know will also not be eating there.

I had lunch at DW 11-13 on Saturday 17th November 2012 with three of my friends. The wine was great and the starters were awesome. Everything was going well until the main course arrived. I had ordered their stuffed chicken, and unfortunately their stuffing wasn't rinsed properly and it felt like I was biting into spinach immersed in sand! I called the Manager (short blonde guy) and told him that the spinach was not properly rinsed because it felt like I was biting into sand. Instead of being apologetic, the Manager attacked me with words and refused to accept that the spinach that I just had, wasn't properly rinsed. I tried explaining to him that I wasn't complaining just for the sake of complaining, but that their stuffing was honestly not rinsed properly. I feel like the Manager needs more grooming, especially in terms of dealing with customers. His approach was in poor taste, and frankly I expect better from a high-end restaurant like DW eleven-13. He stood there for 10 minutes defending the spinach when I was the one that had it! All he did to address my complaint was try to make me out into a liar and I did not appreciate that. Again, I did not appreciate his attitude!!

This restaurant made me realize how lucky people are in Cape Town with the amount of excellent quality restaurants. DW 11-13 is in the Top 10 of the country, one of the very few in Gauteng, so we were intrigued to try it out. We expected high standards because they are in the Top Ten and because their prices are above the average. When we walked in the restaurant the smell of dirty oil in the deep fryer was overwhelming. I couldn't help but stare at the lack of interior design effort that went into this restaurant. The decorations on the wall will fit into a home style-below average rustic cafe. The service was nothing above average: waiters that make jokes with each other five feet away from our table, linen in plastic bags that are way too visible for everyone to see. The restrooms... I think the staff at Pick'nPay have better restrooms then this Top Ten(?) restaurant.Fine Dining is an overall experience, and this was a bad start. We ordered starters and mains. The springbok tataki was good. Good combination of flavours. The prawn tempura lacked the crispness that is a distinctive characteristic of a tempura. Mains, beef fillet was average, couldn't even get a smell of bone marrow on the plate and the red wine jus tasted like reduced beef stock. Duck Special, smokiness in the white bean puree was way too overpowering for the chewy duck. Lamb - I've had better at bistro-style restaurants. To say the least we were all very dissapointed with the overall experience. If you want to charge La Colombe prices, your standard better be La Colombe standard which it clearly is not. The wine was outstanding - Springfield Wild Yeast Chardonnay.

Food24 eats at... DW 11-13

by: Caro de Waal

Marthinus Ferreira is the heart and soul of one of Joburgs’ top restaurants DW eleven-13.

His passion and warmth comes through in his imaginative and unique dishes which are filled with colour and flavour.

Voted one of SA’s top 20 restaurants this year, DW eleven-13 is set to soar and is fast becoming a favourite foodie destination when visiting the Highveld.

Service
Friendly but not pretentious and our waiter had a vast knowledge of all the dishes and wines.

I am finding more and more that Joburg restaurants have really got their service right, and this was no exception.

Food
No fiddly, teensy portions and you really get the feeling that each dish has been lovingly thought out and created. His flavours are strong and bold he has a knack for interesting combinations that work. He creates an exciting and innovative foodie experience.

Everything is made on site and the menu changes regularly to fit in with the seasons and Marthinus’ ever-evolving inspiration.

Check out some yummy pics in the DW eleven-13 gallery.

Wine
A large ‘by-the-glass’ menu with stunning wines which I found refreshing, great SA wines and a seriously impressive International list brought in by wine guru Guy Harcourt-Wood from Great Domaines.

Pricing
Starters R55–R115, mains R115–R150, desserts R40–R65.

Perfect for
A romantic evening, special occasion or a great foodie experience.
