Aarya is the restaurant run by South Africa’s first MasterChef SA winner, Deena Naidoo. The restaurant is located in the heart of Montecasino’s vibrant Outdoor Piazza.

Deena decided to name the restaurant in honour of his 10-year old daughter – the apple of his eye – who in turn was given the name for its Sanskrit meaning, which is noble, kind, honourable, dear, and favourable, and is considered to be a respectful way of addressing women.

The restaurant menu reflects the South African nation and what the MasterChef competition was all about.

Deena has an extensive knowledge of spices, which will clearly be seen and tasted in the dishes on the menu. “I want to break my personal stereotype that I associate with the Indian food experience. Throughout MasterChef, I proved that I’m not the curry king and that my food reflects the South African palate, in all its diversity and multicultural influences. The new world is defined by spice, and the dishes on my menu are strongly spice and flavour-orientated. All Aarya’s dishes are close to my heart and to my philosophy of highlighting core flavours and using ingredients in moderation.”

Decided to try this restaurant even though I was advised by friend in JHB that food was lousy. After perusing the menu we walked out. Everything was overpriced. We had wanted Indian curries. The only curry item was butter chicken.

After reading the reviews, many of which are negative, I was very sceptical about trying Aarya but there was no reason for concern at all. The staff at the door were warm and efficient but it was our waiter who shone beyond exception. He made excellent recommendations and his attention to detail was fantastic. The food was delicious; we had the prawns perfectly cooked and moreish, the fish –well balanced in terms of flavour and accompaniments and the lamb shank was falling of the bone complimented by the flavours of the butternut and rosemary. However, I will say that Aarya is not for everyone – for those expecting the pom and frills of fine dining, it’s probably not the place for you. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable and overall the experience was wonderful – will definitely go back.

Experience 1 Very impressed with ambience. Chefs pumping waiters very busy. Food did not live up to expectations - wifes butter chicken bland and cold in tangine; my lamb shank cooked, cold and tasteless. ps only steak needs to rest not all food! Experience 2 Very different on a Sunday night. Manager more interested in one of the young girls at a back table than making sure things going ok. Table not set properly and still dirty. Food not memorable in any way - meat balls tasty but combo just didn't hit the spot; chicken pizza bland. Experience 3 Comedy of errors. Arrived just beofr 12 on a Saterday to be told only open at 12. Ok wait until 12 and on being seated a young lady starts a polisher inside. Then told by another lady that they only open at 12:30! This prestige establishmnet needs to get it's act into gear. In my humble opinion you cannot own and manage a restaurant from Durbs no matter how good you think your staff are!

A very mediocre experience. I was not impressed by the quality or taste of the food. The service was average and after all the hype one would have expected a better meal. Just to mention after all the food shows on TV the South Africa diner is now more aware of what is average and what is not. The chips were frozen and deep fried. I would have expected fresh potatoe chips come on it is the Masterchef winners restaurant. Will definitely not go back. I complained about the poor quality and was offered complementary dessert which I also refused. Didnt want to chance another bad taste.

A "ho humm" hotel restaurant to which a couple of spicey dishes have been added. In an 80% empty restaurant service and a decent table were hard to come by. Chef Deena nowhere to be seen. His signature dishes sat uneasily amidst the menu of standard hotel fare. A nonsense experience.

Went back after a few months. Food is still great. Had the Prawn salad and the Lamb Shank. The pork ribs were juicy and well cooked. Overall - Food wholesome and service attentive and very friendly. Will go back any time - I notice the website mentions that this is an Indian Restaurant - think this is incorrect - please update your website.

After looking forward to eating at a "Masterchef" restaurant I couldn't have been more disappointed! Ambience and service was good, but the food was sub-standard to be kind! I have a penchant for curries and so can never resist trying a butter chicken or rogan josh if on a menu, well ... Deena's so-called "award winning" butter chicken is 2nd worst only to some arbitrary place at The Gateway in Umhlanga (the name of which I have shunned from memory). Tasteless, uninspired and nothing more than a poor attempt at a turmeric loaded chicken curry with zero authenticity!
