Food and family keep business on track at this 114-year-old Jo'burg deli.

'I came, I saw, I played, ' says George Lagoudis, owner of A Portas, one of Jo'burg's original delis. George and his wife Areti are the third generation of the family to run the 114-year-old business specialising in Italian and Greek foods.

When George, the train fanatic, took over, he extended the shop to include shelves of model trains, hence two names for one shop. The deli is a great novelty (where else in the world can you sip coffee and discuss trains at the same time, other than at a train station?) and visited by train enthusiasts country-wide. You’ll also find some wonderful Italian and Greek delicacies – the cheese, olives, cold meats, phyllo pastry and coffee are first rate.
