Food24 review: The Conservatory

Cath Shone enjoys an evening of understated elegance at the Table Bay Hotel.

The Conservatory Restaurant

You could not hope to find a more romantic or elegant setting than The Conservatory at The Table Bay Hotel.

Enjoy the heady experience of eating out in another world, think Pretty Woman, if you make The Conservatory Restaurant your choice of restaurant - the Julia Roberts red dress is optional, as this is informal elegant dining at its very best.

Picture comfortable armchair-styled seating with someone playing the piano in the background, accompanied by world class views of Table Mountain, impeccable service and a most agreeable menu.

The Menu

The menu offers a variety of delicious starters from Fresh Black Beard Mussels  finished with Riesling, tomato and fennel (R60) to Pea and Mushroom Risotto (R60) and Franschhoek Trout and Hand Caught Snoek Terrine (R65).

There is a nice Cape Malay section on the main menu offering traditional Cape Malay Lamb Curry and Malay Butter Chicken for R115 and R105 respectively.

The rest of the main menu consists of a nice balance of seafood with Pan Seared West Coast Sole with maître’d butter, lemon and Vetkoek Potatoes (R110) to the Chef’s Aged Karan Beef Fillet with twice cooked lager potatoes, steamed asparagus, truffle butter and Béarnaise sauce (R140).

Masala Grilled Rump with Potatoes and Wild Mushrooms (R105) and Fynbos Honey Lemon Free Range Chicken Supreme Parmesan Polenta and Pea Casserole (R105) also make for interesting and reasonable priced menu items.

A Prawn, Chili and Lime Tagliatelle with shellfish essence (R95) for those who fancy a pasta and an Oven Roasted Vegetable Tart for the vegetarians at R85.

A nice choice of desserts, and may I recommend the Study of Banana (R55) to finish off a very pleasant dining experience.

Perfect for

If you’re looking for somewhere new to impress someone on a hot date, perhaps you should think about this exquisitely tasteful hotel restaurant that has been around for a while.
