HQ (Headquarters Restaurant)'s Reviews

Yes the place is good and the steak is very nice but I can't get over the attitude of take what you get and that is it. The wine is very very expensive and you may not bring your own bottle. If people enjoy been told what they are going to eat and can have nothing else then I am amazed.

Went to HQ last night, the meal was tasty and overall service was good..however, having read about the concept in the press I was a little disappointed in the steak - if all you do is steak then I think the steak should be out of this world...mine wasn't - make no mistake, it was good .. but not special.

We had dinner at HQ on Friday evening and I was far from impressed. The vibe was great and the bar was busy. DJ Rene is always a crowd puller. The simple salad was good with a lovely mustard dressing. However the main reason for choosing a venue like this was for a good steak. I felt the sirloin steak was under matured and therefore tough as well as small. - For R140 this was disappointing!! I totally agree with Jules - 13 March 2009. It would also be nice to have some sauces to choose from.

Was at HQ last night at it was pumping. What a great space - good vibe and attentive staff. Sirloin was simply unbelievable - cooked perfectly and the sauce is so moreish. Well done to that team...

My warmest compliments to the whole HQ team for a really superb dining experience. Beautiful interior, seriously good steak, really funky waiter, lovely wine served at a great temperature and just super all round value. When I am in the Cape again I will certainly be back.

What an unbelievable experience from my first contact on the phone till we left. The food, service , decor, management and staff were so friendly and attentive and made the experience for my wife and I unforgettable. Great cocktails and superb wine list. Well done to the manager Lance and the rest of the team. We wont hesitate to return or recommend you to friends.

35 day matured Namibian Entrecote being "banged" with a mallet in the open kitchen/ grill area, made me wonder as it should be as tender as butter. When the meal arrived I knew why, it should have been banged a bit more as it needed much more maturing, the meat was rather tough. The only part of the meal one can order is the 'doneness' of the meat, however medium well ended being medium rare and med rare was rare, should the meat have been tender and 'matured' this would not have mattered, alas. Chef, slice the entrecote at 45degrees and it allows you a nice flare on the plate.

I visited this restaurant the other day and really enjoyed it....maybe it would have helped that the waiter explained the concept instead of abruptly telling me that there was no menu and that it was steak salad and chips. Great wine list with some stars on it even though like its owners Caveau's wine list the prices are too expensive....150% mark-up minimum. Interesting that the red wine was too cold and had to send it back, much colder than the recommended 16 degrees, I had white wine in Caveau the previous week and it was too warm so they are obviously having some issues with the fridges which needs to be sorted particularly if you are paying 100-400 rand for a bottle of wine Steak was great and as suggested in the other reviews I would have the rich sauce on the side. I doubt that this place is going to work though, Capetonians just wont pay the cost and accept the small steaks, so lets see how it performs when all the tourists have left...best of luck to them.

I must admit that I find it novel and very brave to have nothing on your menu but sirloin steak. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Cape Town will bite into this idea that might suit a Sandton crowd a bit better. However that said I love the interior and the bar is fabulous for cocktails with a delicious selection. Service was also top notch and friendly. Bottom line is will I pay a set price of a R140 for a dining experience that consisted of a salad with an awesome vinaigrette, a 250g sirloin steak and skinny fries... yes. Next time I'll order the very very rich sauce on the side and go for a medium to rare steak instead of medium. If R140 is a bit too rich for you then at least go and have a cocktail in one of Cape Town's coolest new spots.

Great place!! Love the idea and have been back three times already. Sirloin is tender and the sauce is simply mind-blowing. Best steak in town and great cocktail selection from the bar. Service was excellent as well.
