Geisha Wok And Noodle Bar's Reviews

1 Sushi is mediocre, service is ok but the prices are exorbitant. Way out of sync with the rest of Cape Town's sushi fraternity. Somehow the management thought that there would be big demand for this cramped restaurant and hiked up prices to the heavens.

2 Geisha has been designed in the similar vein as Wagga Mamma noodle chain in London. The same concept of ''communal eating'' has been applied. However one must take into consideration that all Wagga Mamma stores are huge with tables that can seat up to 40 people so space is not a premium. What Geishas have done is cram the same concept into a tiny shop and this causes friction as it is highly irritating having to share a small table with a stranger who is in earshot of your conversation. Furthermore, nobody wants to enjoy sushi, which is a slow eating food, crammed up. What's more, the music is very load at Geisha leading to one having to scream literally only to have the entire table (strangers and all) hear you. I must admit that my first time there (and my last) was not enjoyable as the place felt cold and clinical. I still can't understand why the need two ''doormen'' to stand there...it's not a club!

3 Wet to Geisha's last night for the first time. Service was great and the sushi was good. Must admit though that their portions of non-sushi items like the large servicing of noodles are quite small considering the price. Furthermore, they charge R70 corkage fee on a bottle of JC Le Roux sparkling wine. That must surely rate at the top end of corkage rate in this country. Desert menu sounded interesting but at R40 a pop, one would expect a good portion. Sadly not. I do admit that it is situated in Moullie Point, which is on the doorstep of the Waterfront, and one would expect over the top prices but come winter, I don't see many locals flocking there in their droves.

4 superb food great value for money

5 What a fantastic spot, the hostesses were the hottest girls I have ever seen and the dim sum really out of this world.

6 I finally made it to the Wok and Noodle bar last night, and it was good. The wine list left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth though. I'm not really sure why restaurants feel they need to sell the most expensive wines on their wine lists. Why not also sell the more affordable wines, so patrons like me can have more than 1 bottle? Their cheapest Sauvignon Blanc is R110 (Fleur de Cap) which they are very conveniently sold out of (it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why...) The waitress very happily suggested we try the Iona, which is very 'similar', at R225 a bottle. Great up-selling. The food was great though, and I will go back. I'll just take my own wine next time.

7 Entertained some property developers there this past week and was a little surprised when I saw only shared tables but I must say we loved it , the food service everything was world class. One of my guests met with the owner and wants' to open a branch in his building in Dubai , well done Geishians!

8 Was brought with friends last night I must say after eating around all the top restaurants around Cape Town this one really is a cut above the rest , have you tasted the flavour of the food? Can I wash dishes here? Will work for food. Give me more dim sum!

9 Ate there again on Wednesday - could it be the camera crews and TV stars or could it be they know what they are doing - food was out of this world! Reviews were right about the duck dim sum - wanted more - fast becoming a regular dinner spot for us.

10 What a great concept I have eaten there three times and it just gets better , its great to see new restaurants with guts and heart. I am booked again sat with eight friends, can't wait for that dim sum.

11 I was invited to the VIP evening along side 1 of my work colleague. First, I don't like seeing chefs smoking at the back door and I hate dirty kitchen floor. One comment I have : Image, money and good relations won't make a place successful. The food hasn't got the WOW factor. This is Geisha honey moon period, I dare to imagine the food next year. Such a complex menu! Keep it simple, fresh and constant makes more sense to me.

12 Went to the VIP opening of this talked about joint last Wednesday. If this was what the VIP-media opening looked like, I'd hate to be an ordinary paying punter. Service was slow and arrogant, bar unable to keep up and no information for the media. As for the sushi: under-vinegared rice and luke-warm tuna and line fish exuding subtle fishy smell. Wide berth.

13 Attended the launch of the new menu last night. The food was top notch and it was a great chance to sample practically the entire menu. Conrad and his staff work super hard to ensure a great dining experience. The staff are knowledgeable and well trained. I will definitely be going back really soon to share the food with my good friends. Last point: And it's about time that Capetonians get into the gloabl spirit of things and learn to sit down and share a table with another potentially very interesting couples.

14 I agree calling the place Geisha, serving sushi and dim sum, soba noodles doesn't mean it is Japanese. It is a bit like calling a Pub O'Neils, painting it green, orange and white and serving Guinness, but calling it a Dutch wine bar! At least we know what to expect now, no confusion. I might go to Italian across the road and ask them for a Vindaloo and rice.

15 I had a meal at Geisha last Saturday night (fourth time in the last 3 weeks) and was looking for their website when I found this one. I am not a "foodie", a culinary chef but just a normal 37 year old nurse with a family of 4. The service is always really good and professional, the servers know about wine and flavours. Sadly the food was not good enough to make want to come back again. A good restaurant is a restaurant that keeps the same standards at all times (I could be wrong). Regardless of the cost, this is more about the disappointment of not having a good night out. Two stars is a generous rating.

16 Yeah, sorry Graig, I'm with Charles and Garry on this one! Your complaints just seem rather fickle ...I would have thought that knowing what to expect from a restaurant is a good thing, it shows stability and would much rather expect a good meal, and this is what we got at Geisha... I certainly don?t think they claim to serve traditional Japanese food, so I suggest you stick to what you know and enjoy it, instead of breaking down a good establishment and their staff when you actually don?t have your facts straight.

mike : June 18, 2008
17 I don't understand why every time someone writes a not so glamorous review about this place, they are getting abuse? We are living a proud free country and we are allowed to have an opinion without getting some verbal abuse.

graig : June 16, 2008
18 Hey Graig you sound very Japanese. I think anonymous reviewers like yourself should rather shut off your computers and your mouths. What is your problem? Why don't you buy yourself a Japanese cookbook and cook your own Japanese food at home.

garry : June 16, 2008
19 Being an avid foodie and after being to Asia on business on many occasions and my wife being Vietnamese, we have eaten today at Geisha for the fourth time, it is a fantastic restaurant, we find the food so interesting and different and the flavours are magic, my wife claims it is the best Asian food outside Asia. Dim sum and sushi is the best we have ever had and the Kobe beef sensational.

Nicholas : June 16, 2008
20 Graig where does it say that Geisha is a Japanese restaurant? It is a modern noodle bar similar to other eateries around London and New York, how can you possibly say it's expensive. I brought my entire family there for dinner and had several dishes each to eat and the bill was only R400. I suggest you stay at home next time Graig, order takeaways. Geisha for me and all my family, who are well travelled, think it is a brilliant restaurant and can't wait to go back.

Charles : June 16, 2008
21 Positives: 1. Good, courteous service, location and clean decor. Negative: As a Japanese person, I felt the food was just not authentic at all. All the dishes pretty much used the same sauces/spices and ended up tasting the same (which is 'not' what they taste like in the authentic original version) ). In all, I found the food unsatisfactory. The ambience could do with some improvement. (Very noisy). Lacks any variety: It is exactly identical to several other trendy Asian style restaurants (easy to find out where the head chef was working in Cape Town before) here in terms of the menu etc. My conclusion: If you are not looking for authentic food, prefer not to have any surprises (ie prefer to know even before you enter the place that it is exactly what you would expect from almost any number of other places) and want it to be over priced, I think it fits the bill.

Graig : June 15, 2008
22 Been to Geisha recently after seeing the Head Chef, Fred Faucheux at the Good Food and Wine show recently, he certainly made an impression and after eating at the restaurant, I have to say, a lasting one! Well done to the whole team! What a fantastic evening and we will certainly return for the best food in Cape Town!

Sam : June 12, 2008
23 We tried the new fusion sushi menu today for the first time, had the abalone and the tuna, I have eaten sushi all over Japan and Sydney and this really was world class, well done Geisha, bravo bravo.

Israel : June 10, 2008
24 Great restaurant, great food and great service, its rather sad to see the negative reviews, it seems most of these people who write these reviews are food and service experts, it must be terrible to go out at night and convert into critics, don't you people know how to have fun?

Darren : June 10, 2008
25 Well done Conrad, fantastic food, great vibe and stunning decor, pity your Manager seems so full of himself, does he spend all day fixing his hair?

Melissa : June 10, 2008
26 For the most creative cuisine in South Africa, the coolest, funkiest vibe, the staff really go out of their way to make you feel like royalty. I believe the owner, Conrad cooks from time to time, he is apparently a genius according to the watron that served me.

Alan : June 10, 2008
27 If you want good food, delightful service and a good vibe Geisha is the place to be, we booked a party of 30 people and they were more than accommodating, I think at R40 for a small bowl of noodles and R80 for a large is very reasonable for a good meal these days.

Sandy : June 10, 2008
28 I am so disappointed. We went to Geisha for the first time and the worst experience ever. We arrived at the restaurant to be completely ignored. Hostess was standing at the bar with one of the waiters getting very intimate. When we where finally noticed. She seated us without even welcoming us. Sebastian our waiter was very average and came across as if he didn?t feel like serving us. The prawn dim sum had no coriander as so stated on the menu. Our drinks took 12 minutes, and we had to keep looking for our waiter. The cherry on the top was that during our whole dinner. The manager never came to our table once, he seemed to busy talking on the phone and playing with his hair. We aren?t people to complain. But for the kind of prices you are paying I must say I far prefer going to somewhere, where they back it up with service and customer recognition.

Christine : June 10, 2008
29 Excellent food - table set up not for everyone and overpriced wines - but the food was outstanding and I for one will continue to go back.

Ceri : May 20, 2008
30 The most amaizing Sushi ever. Excellent selection, super quick and the best quality by far.Apparently they are coming out with a even better menu on the 1 June.Service very slick and most enjoyable dining experience.

Lucy : May 19, 2008
31 Why is our country full of negative people with all these negative comments from el cheapos. Why do you people go out if you cannot afford it? It is always the "poverty stricken" tap water drinkers that will constantly complain. Furthermore if you only have a limited budget to go out then don't. Rather stay at home and watch the cooking channel. And finally a table of four sharing dim sum and bringing their own wine and ordering tap water. Has the restaurant become a picnic site? Geisha is truly fantastic with great food.

32 Joined Geisha Friday night for dinner - no reservation made. Was bowled over by the hostess and managers hospitality. Our waiter - Chris - truly a blessing to the trade. Dinner was mouthwateringly tasty even though I felt the wine list was a tad limited. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back!

Michael : May 11, 2008
33 Never again will we go to Geisha. I found the place filthy and the toilets disgusting. The restaurant was only marginally better. I also found it over priced, the size and quality of the portions has decreased, and were very embarrassed as our friends asked us to join them, after we recommended them to go there. We were offered a menu but the kitchen ran out of fish and desserts. No need to say that our friends were bitterly disappointed and my husband and I embarrassed. Visit at your own risk!

34 Wow, what a sexy looking restaurant. We love sushi and other Asian food. But little did we know we would hit the jackpot. Very slick service and quality of food outstanding. Yes they are not cheap, but for what you are getting I reckon it?s great value for money. Their Cocktails are amazing as well by the way. You must try the assiette of desserts, it absolutely to die for. Well done guys, we will be back soon.

Michelle : May 10, 2008
35 I agree with Mandy, clearly Frank, Martina and George dont have a clue when it come to dining out. That is if you are used to dining at Ocean Basket. The concept of the restaurant is that of communal dining, and I did notice that they seperate 2 seater benches for those diners that dont particularly want to share a table with others. The food was impressive and yes it is not cheap but when you want great quality it is to be expected that you will pay a bit more. Their cocktails were excellent and their service was right on the money!

colin : May 07, 2008
36 I must say, I think some of the reviews below are unfair. Granted, it is pretty noisy and could do with some acoustic improvements, and the communal dining is a bit cramped. But if you love London's Wagamama, you won't be disappointed. We were a table of 5 for a birthday celebration and had a fantastic waitress who was really on the ball. She made some great recommendations, and we started with a variety of dim sum / Asian tapas, followed by a few noodle dishes to share. The food was exceptional, each dish as delicious as the next. The dessert platter was amazing, would highly recommend the creme brulee and the ice cream. It's probably not the place for a romantic evening out, but the decor is slick and trendy and overall it was a great night out.

Mandy : May 07, 2008
37 Not very impressed, overpriced, sushi revolting, and waiter not the brightest!

Ashley : May 03, 2008
38 Worst dining experience in a year. I and my dining companion arrive around 7:15pm, with no reservation, and are promptly seated directly at a cramped table . It is not lovely, though our view is of the parking lot, and the rest of a stranger's armpits. Let's not discount the parking lot scene though, as this allows much cattiness to ensue, watching hordes of "the cool crowd" step out of their sports cars, hideously dressed, saunter off to the nearest club or restaurant. Sure it's mean-spirited, but after munching on a couple of the dishes here, you'll be ready to let the acid drip from your tongue. The food is simply not good. Let me put it this way, I felt like it was a prank from some friends, but no, it was reality. They have served us air plane food with chopsticks. Service is just barely average, with little if no interest in the customer.

Martina : May 03, 2008
39 Have to agree with the others, the service left a lot to be desired on both my visits. I also found it very expensive for Cape Town. Food was only ok.

Frank : April 25, 2008
40 Absolutely shocking service and prices are way over the top, totally agree with George.

Vonda : April 22, 2008
41 The food is very overpriced for what you actually get, the music is far too loud, do not go if you want a conversation with your guests as its not possible, and as for the communal seating this is a new one for Cape Town, basically allows greedy restaurant owners squeeze even more people in, we were a table for 4 which was already cramped and they then piled in more people at the end of our bench, very uncomfortable. Thumbs down I'm afraid.

42 We had a girls outing. What a great lunch we had. We started our celebrations off with a Geisha Love cocktail (Champagne, Vanilla Vodka & Kir Royale), absolutely divine. To eat we had sushi for starters. We are avid sushi eaters and theirs has to be the best. Main course we had beef and prawn soba noodles, the flavours were well balanced and very refreshing. I discovered a new sauv blanc "Nice selection, nicely priced".It was called Black Oyster Catcher. We where quite full at the end so we shared desserts between all of us. This mini selection of desserts was beautifully presented and enough for the 4 of us to share. Thank you Geisha for wonderful and special lunch, we had a lovely experience.

claire : April 17, 2008
43 Our First time at Geisha. We love Asian food. I must say the sushi is the best we have ever had and their wok fried salmon superb. The waiter recommended the espresso martini, a first for me! But I must say the best martini I have ever had. Their service seems very jacked up and although they are up market I find their pricing to be very reasonable. We will definitely be back!

Michelle : April 17, 2008
44 We whent to Geisha and had a fantastic evening. The communal Dining is fun,but not for the romantic. The food was excellent, the way to go is to Tappas, sushi ,dimsum to share. Then order a Wok and a Noodle dish to share awsome experience. Their new wine list is well priced and has something for everyone. All in All 8 out of 10, thanks guys we will be back!

Grant : April 16, 2008
45 Overpriced, staff don't have a clue what they are doing and the music is far too loud. Won't be back again.

susan : April 11, 2008
46 I am not a food critic and on actual fact I am very relaxed customer as I never complain... I just don't come back. Geisha is over priced, the kitchen is badly run. The head chef hasn't got a clue in what to do under pressure. Food is average, sad when you think that the owner was a Michelin star chef in Europe. The price of the menu shows that they only want a certain class of punters like rich tourists and Expat Europeans, leaving South Africans out of the pictures. This is not a restaurant for foodies but a place to be seen only. Food 2/10. service 4/10 (depending on your accent). Never again
