Pepenero's Reviews

I really loved this place and went back again and again... The food is amazing, I used to hate beef but they served me a beef fillet with avocado and I was converted to beef on that day! Service is excellent from the hostess to the barman. The waiters are attentive and you don't spend a huge part of the night trying to find your waiter coz they are always in sight when you need them. Not hovering over you but just there to serve you. Oh and they gave me my bill on time.. I'm very fussy about this. When I ask for my bill it's because I might have a plane to catch so if it comes after ten years I get a bit cheesed off... The place is clean , ambiance. All their dishes just don't disappoint. I think they have the best Norwegian Salmon..

Was first at Pepenero in June this year, and was back again last night. I still enjoyed it! great specials and thanks to Thembalani the barman who was very friendly and professional. I forgot our waiters name but he was great!

Hi Dave, it is very unfortunate to hear about your unpleasant dining experience. Are you able to provide me with the date of which you visited our establishment, as we would like to rectify the problem. We pride ourselves on complete dining experience and the attitude you have received from both staff and management is completely unacceptable and we would like to take it up with the individual concerned. I hope that you will give us a second chance and re-visit our establishment. (info@pepenero.co.za)

The service/decor was fine, but the chef was dismal. The sushi was bland, the seafood was bad. Money unwisely spent.

A party of four we asked for the music to be turned down, but they refused, when insisting on seeing manager we were told that he was busy with friends and could not be disturbed, despite our complaints as well as adjoining tables. We left.

Had several pleasant al fresco afternoons pigging on sushi/sashimi and possibly a little too much wine. Service always been pleasant/friendly if a little 'naive' at times. Disappointment came few weeks ago ordering seafood platter special after a few rounds of sushi. They'd run out of prawns and 'baby crayfish'. I felt like some cob (kabeljou) and calamari so ordered the platter anyway waiter saying that extra of the remaining fish/mussels/calamari would be added (similar problem experienced by Lauren below). Small side salad was brought which may have been comp. If what I was served had 'extra' seafood added I would hate to see the regular portion! Usually don't keep quiet but because we had a really pleasant afternoon I decided not to spoil it for others and kept quiet. I was in hospitality industry for 21 years several of in a seafood restaurant so I think I know what's unacceptable. I'm sure I'll be back, can't shoot the chef for one mistake eh :-)

Comfortable, spacious seating, pleasant ambience, excellent service but disappointing food. I felt that the seafood platter was not the right product quality. The house salad was unremarkable and the bread not fresh. Nice restaurant for hanging out if food not that important.

Took friends from the UK for supper there about 3 weeks ago. Staff initially were quite off-hand about our reserved table (rather off-putting), but warmed as the evening wore on. We had a lovely 3 course meal (small portions, but tasty). Tad expensive for what is dished up. Super view.

It was great to have the half-price sushi, but even so - the selection was quite boring. My friends had the rump steak special of the day at R79 were not impressed. Service a tad too inattentive. Lovely vibe, pricey, good views.

I am very disappointed to be writing this review about Pepenero, particularly after coming to the restaurant in the past for cocktails and sushi at sunset and being quite impressed. My father had foreign clients down from Italy and I suggested Pepenero. The waiter taking care of them began the evening by saying that they can't have the rump steak as advertised because it was tough and chewy (!). After being told a further choice was not available, they made their order only to be told by the waiter "Ok, well I don't think I'll be able to get all the food out at the same time because the sushi bar and the kitchen are separate".
This is absolutely pathetic and totally unacceptable for any restaurant, let alone one of Pepenero's standards. Make a plan, it is the manager's job to train the waiters to handle simple things such as correct food timing. After the rest of the table had already eaten their starters, the portion of sushi starter arrived, so one guest was left to eat alone and with much embarrassment.
After finally being told a decent peppered rump steak could be served, this arrived with more peppercorns than actual steak.. Your seafood 'platter' as advertised was little more than a large plate with a tiny piece of fish, 3 mussels, a few pieces of calamari and tiny prawns. The 'baby crayfish' that was advertised was not available, and was substituted with more prawns. The waiter was not present, nor did any manager or superior member of staff come to ask if everyone was enjoying their food and evening (and they surely would have said NO!). While eating their desserts another waiter came round and asked if they would like some bread to start.
My father's Italian client could not believe that he had to ask three separate times for bread to be brought, which is standard in your restaurant. Overall, the evening was unpleasant, the service poor, the presence of management non-existent and the food average. On leaving, no one said goodbye and asked if the evening was enjoyable. For a high class establishment such as Pepenero, this is unacceptable. I hope you will take this and other reviews on this website, into consideration, you really do have a lovely restaurant, but it is being brought down terribly by such basic things.

Please don't waste your time and money, as I did. I read the negative reviews and put them down to 'hard to please' customers. I was wrong! 1. Our waitress was clueless: - She brought the wrong menus 3 times in a row. - She disappeared for 20min+ at a time. It took us almost an hour to place our food order! - One person ordered 2 starters as a main course, yet one still came as a starter. - She had no clue who had ordered each dish, so randomly put plates on the table. 2. On 3 separate occasions waiters brought food and drinks to the table that we hadn't ordered. Total confusion! 3. After an unnecessarily protracted 3 hour dinner we couldn't find our waitress to ask for the bill. We complained to the manager, who promised to find her. Almost 30min later she wandered in off the street; she had left the restaurant entirely! Neither the waitress nor the manager apologised, they just avoided us. The terrible service and 'couldn't care' attitude of management ruined our evening.

Where do I start? It was the most amazing dinner that I've had in years. The place is absolutely amazing, lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff all around, I will definitely recommend my guests and friends even to go for a meal at Pepenero. I will myself return to your place very soon.

Oh, what a mind blowing experience. The girls and I just loved the sushi - the best I've ever tasted... unbelievably half price! The manager and servers gave us such good service - making such a fuss we felt like VIP's.

We had a fantastic time at Pepenero last night. From the R89.00 for a kg of prawns (delish!) to the half price cocktails (party time!) and vibey atmosphere - everything was top notch. Looking forward to our next visit. And thanks to John for looking after us. You guys rock!

I haven't been to Pepenero in a long time since my last experience wasn't great! I was invited there last night and what pleasant suprise. From the minute we walked in we were treated like VIP. Our waiter, who had obviously been very well trained, recommendations were spot on the entire evening. We had an array of starters consisting of Beef Carpaccio, calamari and Parmesan Crusted Aubergine and one of the best sushi platters I have ever tasted. I had prawn linguine pasta which I am going back for tomorrow. All the other guests enjoyed their dinner thoroughly. Our waiter also told us about all the new exciting specials coming up and I am very excited about that! Well done Pepenero, What a turn-around!

Beautiful, elegant restaurant with awesome views. I went there for my father's 50th and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. The waiters were attentive but not overly so, the hostess warm and welcoming , music cool and vibey and the food was really , really good. I had the calamari to start and the baby kingklip as a main , every bite was delicious. Will be back and back and back.
