Hi Shaun please don't be misinformed, I have no involvement in Cubana at all, never ever been there, but as an ex restaurant owner I like reading the comments made, hoping to see if the industry has got rid of the opportunists that are always looking for a free meal. I think that it has become a cut throat business with basically 2.5 days to make sufficient turnover. That's why I made my comment. Any party of 20 (coffee drinkers) would always be welcome from Monday to Thursday but not on Friday and Saturday. Once again I have no interest in Cubana at all!

Hey Andre reading your last response confirms what everyone is saying about how egotistical your management seem to be mate remember you are in the service industry not in service my ego by being a bully, remember no patrons no job for you buddy.

What did Alice think, that on a busy night they would allow 20 pax in and say you don't have to have a meal, it's like going to Emily's on a Friday night and ordering 20 coffees. See how they will react please wake up and smell the roses!

What a disappointment - I will never go back there again - the management and staff are rude and obviously have a chip on their shoulders - It is possibly one of the worst experiences I have ever had.

I went to Cubana in Greenpoint for a friend's birthday party, we were a table for 20 people and we booked at least a week in advance and confirmed the table beforehand. Once we arrived we found out that they had obviously given our table away - the managers then haphazardly pushed three benches together - not nearly enough for the 20 of us. However; about 45 minutes into arriving in the restaurant the managers almost attacked one of our party stating that we all have to eat otherwise we would all be charge R40 per person for the privileged of being allowed to sit down. Never in the four conversations on the phone did anyone mention this fact. The manager became so rude and over the top that he actually started yelling. We eventually decided to leave and I have to say that we will never set foot in that place again! I am shocked at the ego charged, rudeness - I have never in my life been treated so badly!

Hi all I have to say my experience was so terrible; to an extent that I'll never sent foot at any other branch with the name "Cubana". My day was totally spoilt, all I can say is thanks guys for nothing.

Dear A
I think that it is very unfortunate that you and your family were not allowed into Cubana to expereince this awesome restaurant because you looked "sloppy"!!! I was at Cubana in Stellenbosch on Saturday night and had totaly different expereince. They let in a black couple dressed in tracksuits, along with many other patrons dressed in a very casual way so I agree with Sean I don't think it is a race thing, I think its just the bouncer trying to exercise authority. Remember he is after all only a BOUNCER!!!

No offence dude no need to pull the race card I have also been bounced from there wear similar clothing to you and I am a young white accountant they just seem to love to exercise their right of admission reserved .....

I'm a young black accountant and on friday the 29 of August me, my siblings together with some cousins of mine, decided to go and eat at Cubana. When we got there I was was told that I was not dressed adequately, as the dress code was "smart casual". Mind you I was wearing ARMANI jeans, D&G belt, FABIANI t-shirt and LA COSTE canvass shoes. While I was arguing with the bouncer, scores of other people were being allowed in without questions asked, some of them wearing baggy jeans, training shoes and plain white t-shirts. We talked to the manager by the name of Peter, who told us that the reason why we were not being allowed in was because we looked "sloppy".

I am a regular at the Greenpoint branch and I see the thousands of people that go through that place on a weekly basis. It would be impossible to keep everybody satisfied. I think they are doing a stand up job... Keep up the good work for you cannot please everybody. PS. Great food and Drinks.

I have been quite a few times to Cubana and we are always treated well, except for this one occasion we got there on a Sunday evening and to be seated, and all over on the tables were reserved signs, the first question we were asked was are we going to eat. My problem is that what difference is it going make if we going eat or not. We were very disappointed and went to Claremont Cubana, Greenpoint cubana is just not the same anymore, they really need to shape up on their hospitality and service.

As a young woman who has been living in the US, I am shocked at the discrimination and harassment of the door staff at Cubana Greenpoint. In June 2008, on a Friday, me and my friend who is from London (we are both 24) tried to enter Cubana but the doorman named Steven said that the two of us were specifically not allowed in. We are both 23 so not underage, and were appropriately dressed. The doorman was allowing anyone and everyone in, but specifically singled us out. The doorman could offer no reason, but eventually said we don't seem like we would spend money in there. We asked to speak with a manager but were denied, and then the doormen grabbed us and pushed us out. My shoe came off and my friend was bruised. Steve was so insulting in his attitude that I broke down in tears, and he merely laughed. We spoke with one of the managers after the incident, and I even sent a fax, but no explanation has yet been provided. Is this how women are treated in South Africa?

I have been to Cubana in Greenpoint about 5 times and the vibe is good and food is good but the drinks......shoooo, I think they are watered down a bit, the cocktails are not as strong as the ones in Claremont?s Cubana...very disappointing! I have had many friends bring this up saying the drinks weak...anyway just something they could improve on... I definitely will continue going.

Have to agree with the rest of the guys, l am a black manager at another restraunt about 100 yards away from Cubana and on a Friday night, myself and some of my waiters decided to go there to have a drink after we had knocked off work. The other guys went on ahead of me because l had to lock up. When l got there l just went straight in and started looking for them but could not find them. I eventually phoned them to find where they were but they had aready left because they were told that there was a private function. But looking around l could see business as normal to me. I apparently had been let in because l was dressed up formally. On my way out I took it upon myself to look at the door guys and indeed black people were being told to go away. Only white people could enter without being questioned and a few blacks who looked like executives and were formally dressed.

I was extremely disappointed by the service at Cubana Greenpoint. We got there and asked the hostess about a table to which she looked at us with a look of disdain and told us that we "HAD TO WAIT!". Whilst I don't mind waiting, I did mind her rude statement to our international guests. After putting our name on "The list", one of our guests went to find the bathroom, on her way back she lost her way in the crowd and happened to stop (close to the entrance of what I assume is the VIP section), to find her mobile. One of the large bouncers then asked her what she was doing , and before she could answer, he psychically pushed her to the other side.
She came back to us fuming and in almost tears.
We then waited and hour and a half for a table. We asked the hostess about the wait, to which she looked at us, looked at the list and ignored us as if we did not exist!
I will never return! Terrible experience!
Never again will I ever recommend the place

I have been there on a quite a few occasions, once last year, we did leave due to lack of service, but gave it a try a few times after. BUT I was there on Tuesday 2nd April - early evening, the place was not busy. We were seated by the hostess - 20 minutes later still tried to get her attention for some service? She did not even smile or try to get an order, but looked for the waiter? We ordered our drinks, and 15 minutes later got up to leave!! I was so disappointed - their food is good and I enjoy the vibe, but service is questionable. My friend had not been there before, actually visiting from Jhb - we both know the restaurant industry very well, and I worked in the industry for 8 years - the first thing you learn is get your customer a drink! Once they have a drink, not much can go wrong-but hell - 40 minutes and very little service - I am hesitant to go back!!! The hostess should be trained properly to see to a customers needs, she should not have to look around for a waiter!
