I had never been to Society Bistro before, but after hearing the reviews I thought I should try it out.. now I am wondering why it is considered one of the best places to dine in the V&A? Our waiter took far too long to reach our table (even though they were not busy). We finally got our wine which was corked- I might not be a wine expert but after working as a waitress and in the bar of a wine bar for two years, I know a thing or two. When I told my waiter that there was a problem with the wine, he smirked at me and said- "and what would you know?"
The food was terrible, my chicken burger was more like rubber stuck between 2 slices of hard bread, drowned in tomato paste that should be used as a pizza base and my chips were burned. But what shocked me the most was the attitude of my waiter who had his nose stuck in the air when it should have been stuck in the glass of wine before sending it out to his tables. Not an experience I'd like to repeat.

I am commenting on Leon?s review. Can?t you see the man and woman were pissed off at each other and they took it out on the staff. I think Leon is being unfair to kick up such a fuss.

Sunday evening 9:30pm - and everything was still as I would expect it to be at 6:30pm - Beautiful decor, attentive service, stunning wines (with the exception of no Deetlefs wines on the menu) and absolutely gorgeous food! We had 3 courses each and none of us were disappointed. From my kudu loin to my brother in laws absolutely sublime rump! And the desserts were heavenly - definitely my all time favourite dessert (chocholate) A big thumbs up to one of the V&A's best kept secrets!

After taking our drinks order, the waiter brought bread and two pieces of butter, no larger than 1cm x 1cm x 3cm. We had to go and find more. My wife enquired about the chillies in the seafood tagliatelle. He saidd that you could hardly taste it. I ordered a medium rare 300g sirloin, pepper sauce & portion of grilled vegetables. He indicated that their portion is 300g. The meals arrived with me receiving a 200g portion. The pepper sauce was a very watery milky substance, presumably because the cream separated (over- or reheated?). The soggy vegetables were returned. I assume that the vegetables were pre-cooked and then grilled?? too many times. No sign of grilling. My wife took my spinach to mix with her tagliatelle, because it was too hot. The replacement vegetables was so soft, you could feed it to a baby. It was also covered in Origanum, leaving absolutely no natural taste. My empty glass was taken away, without the offer of a re-fill. Had to ask another waitress. Never again.

Superb staff that go the extra mile , great wine list and an assortment of delish meals on offer...their rissotto is gorgeous... rather pricey being my only complaint..! kerry : July 23, 2007
