    cake flour
  • 5
    ml
    salt
  • 20
    g
    instant yeast
  • 110
    g
    margarine
  • 250
    ml
    buttermilk
  • 350
    ml
    lukewarm milk
 

Method

 
Sift the flour and salt together and sprinkle the instant yeast on top. Mix well. Rub the margarine and the flour mixture together between the tips of your fingers. Add the buttermilk and sufficient lukewarm water to form a stiff dough and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic and no longer sticks to your fingers. Cover the dough and leave for half an hour at room temperature. Knead down and divide into 12 equal portions. Roll each piece of dough until it is 20 to 25 cm long. Twist each roll in a spiral round a green stick. Slowly bake over the fire until done. Remove the sticks and fill the hole with butter and syrup. Makes 12 'stokbrood'.
