Ingredients (14)

30.00 ml gravy powder
30.00 ml flour
15.00 ml paprika
900.00 g beef — braising steak
30.00 ml sunflower oil
250.00 ml stock — beef
400.00 g tomatoes — chopped
250.00 ml wine — red
30.00 ml tomato purée
15.00 ml Worcestershire sauce
1.00 turnips — peeled, cubed
8.00 pickling onions — peeled
2.00 leeks — washed and sliced
6.00 carrots — peeled and sliced

Method:

Put gravy powder, flour and paprika in a large, shallow dish and season generously. Add meat and toss to coat well. Heat oil in a large saucepan, add beef and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned.
Add beef stock, tomatoes, red wine, tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1 hour.
Add turnip, onions, leeks and carrots and continue to simmer for 1 1/2 hours, or until meat is tender. Serves 8.
