    butter
  • 375

    castor sugar

    egg yolk
  • 2
    ml
    vanilla essence

    salt

    flour

    baking powder

    milk

    ml
    cocoa powder, blended into a thick paste with a little hot water
 

Method

 
1. Cream butter, add sugar slowly beating well. Mix in egg yolk, vanilla essence and salt. 2. Sift flour and baking powder, and add alternately with the milk, to the mixture to form a firm dough. 3. Divide mixture into two. Add cocoa paste to one half, and knead well. 4. Roll each piece of dough into a rectangular sheet. Place white dough on top of the brown; gently press together. 5. Roll up (as for a Swiss roll) into a tight roll, about 2 cm. Wrap in greaseproof paper and chill until hard. 6. Cut into slices, and bake on greased baking sheets, in an oven preheated to 180 ºC, for 10 minutes.
