    margarine

    buttermilk

    bicarbonate of soda

    maltabella porridge
  • 500
    ml
    bran
  • 750
    ml
    wholewheat flour
  • 250
    ml
    white or brown sugar
  • 10
    ml
    baking powder
  • 10
    ml
    cream of tartar
  • 5
    ml
    salt
  • 250
    ml
    raisins
 

Method

 
Preheat the oven to 180 ºC (350 ºF). Spray an oven pan with non-stick spray. Melt the margarine and allow to cool slightly. Mix the buttermilk and bicarbonate of soda and beat into the melted margarine. Mix all the dry ingredients together and add the buttermilk mixture. Mix well and spoon into the prepared oven pan. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a testing skewer is clean when it comes out of the rusk dough. Cool and cut into large rusks. Place on a baking sheet and dry in the oven at 100 ºC (200 ºF).
