Ostrich steak with berry salsa

Ingredients

  • SALSA
  • 150
    g
    fresh strawberries, coarsely chopped
  • 10
    ml
    castor sugar
  • 10
    ml
    balsamic vinegar
  • 4
    tomatoes, skinned, seeded and chopped
  • 30
    ml
    freshly chopped mint leaves
  • 4
    spring onions, thinly sliced
  • STEAKS
  • 30
    ml
    sunflower oil
  • 2
    cloves garlic, crushed
  • 30
    ml
    lemon juice
  • 5
    ml
    freshly ground black pepper
  • 4
    ostrich steaks, cut from an ostrich fillet
 

Method

10-15 min
 
SALSA Place the berries, sugar and vinegar in a saucepan. Heat over gentle heat for 5 minutes. Cool, then mix in the tomatoes, mint leaves and spring onions. Set aside for at least 30 minutes. STEAKS Mix together the oil, garlic, lemon juice and black pepper in a dish. Add the ostrich steaks and coat well in the mixture. Marinate for 10-15 minutes. Cook the steaks over medium to hot coals on the barbecue/braai for about 5 minutes on each side depending on how thick the steaks are. Serve immediately, accompanied by the berry salsa. Serves 4.
