Ingredients (12)

Syrup
1.00 Litres water
500.00 ml sugar
250.00 ml orange juice
10.00 ml cinnamon — ground
0.00 orange — sliced
BATTER
45.00 ml butter
30.00 ml golden syrup
250.00 ml dates — finely chopped
500.00 ml flour — cake
1.00 ml salt
10.00 ml Bicarbonate of soda
125.00 ml water — lukewarm

Method:

Slowly bring the water, sugar, orange juice and cinnamon to the boil in a large saucepan.
Arrange the orange slices evenly in the saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes.
Remove from the heat and set aside.
Meanwhile melt the butter and golden syrup together and mix well with the dates.
Stir in the cake flour and salt.
Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the milk and add.
Bring the syrup to the boil again and spoon the batter into the boiling syrup.
Cover and simmer for about 1 hour.
Halfway through the cooking process the pudding can be broken into portion-size pieces with a spoon.
Serve with runny custard.
