    grated orange rind
  • 500

    cake flour
  • 10
    ml
    baking powder
  • 2
    ml
    salt
  • 5
    ml
    vanilla essence
  • 60
    ml
    orange juice
  • 80
    ml
    poppy seeds
  • SYRUP
  • 180
    ml
    orange juice
  • 180
    ml
    sugar
  • 1
    orange, grated rind
  • a little sherry or liqueur
 

Method

 
Preheat the oven to 180 °C and grease a 23 cm ring cake tin.
CAKE
Cream the butter and castor sugar, add the eggs one by one, beating well after each addition.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix.
Spoon into the prepared tin and bake for about one hour or until a testing skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
SYRUP
Bring all the ingredients for the syrup to the boil and pour over the hot cake.
Leave the cake to cool in the tin.
Slice and arrange the slices on a cake stand.
