Old-fashioned fried tomato sandwich

  • olive oil

    large, ripe tomatoes, thickly sliced

  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • fresh white bread, sliced thickly


Heat equal amounts of butter and oil in a large frying pan. Arrange the tomato slices in 1 layer in the pan and sprinkle with sugar. Season with salt and lots of black pepper. Cook on high for 15 to 20 minutes until tomato gets squishy and blackened on the edges. While still hot, pile on to fresh white bread and devour with a glass of milk.
