Meatballs in tomato sauce

    meatballs: beef mince

    spring onions, chopped

    garlic cloves, crushed

    sambal oelek or 2 finely chopped chillies
  • 500

    breadcrumbs made from day-old bread

    chopped fresh oregano
  • 1
    egg, lightly whisked

    hash browns with yoghurt dip: salt

    freshly ground black pepper

    tomato sauce: olive oil
  • 2
    medium-size onions, chopped
  • 2
    garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2
    tin
    (420 g each) peeled tomatoes
  • 40

    tomato paste
  • 500
    ml
    beef stock
  • 15
    ml
    sugar
  • 5
    ml
    salt
  • 5
    ml
    freshly ground black pepper

    torn fresh basil
 

Method

Meatballs: Mix all the ingredients well and shape the mixture into small balls.

Tomato sauce: Heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the onions and garlic until soft.
Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, stock, sugar, salt and pepper and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly.
Add the meatballs and basil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until the meatballs are done.
Serve the meatballs and tomato sauce with spaghetti.
