Ingredients (17)

500.00 g mince — beef, pork or lamb
1.00 onion — medium, chopped
1.00 garlic — cloves, crushed
1.00 thick slice white bread — moistened with water
1.00 eggs — large, slightly beaten
25.00 ml tomato sauce
2.00 ml mustard — powder
1.00 ml salt
1.00 ml freshly ground black pepper
1.00 ml dried mixed herbs
50.00 ml fresh parsley — chopped
10.00 ml soy sauce
10.00 ml oil
410.00 g soup — cream of tomato
150.00 ml milk
2.00 ml sugar
2.00 bay leaves

Method:

1. To make the meatballs, mix together all the ingredients except the oil, soup, milk, sugar and bay leaves. Shape into 20 balls.
2. Smear the base of a casserole or baking dish with the oil and arrange the meatballs in a single layer in the dish.
3. Bake, uncovered, in a preheated 220 ºC oven for 30 minutes.
4. Pour off any fat and add the remaining ingredients. Partially cover the container and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
5. Serve hot with magic mashed potatoes (see recipe), or with fettucini. Alphabet noodles are also good with this dish and make it even more attractive to youngsters.
