Hamburgers with barbecue sauce

Ingredients

    x 410 g can brown beans or sugar beans, drained

    each vinegar and Worcestershire sauce
  • 2

    finely chopped garlic

    lean topside mince
  • 1
    medium onion, chopped
  • 1
    celery stalk, chopped
  • 1
    slice bread, crumbled
  • 250
    ml
    oat bran
  • 5
    ml
    beef stock powder
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1
    egg
  • 5
    ml
    canola oil or olive oil
  • TO SERVE
  • 8
    hamburger rolls
  • tomato slices
  • lettuce leaves
 

Method

PATTIES
Mash the beans with the vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and garlic or process in a food processor.
Add the mince, onion, celery, breadcrumbs, oat bran, beef stock powder, pepper and egg and mix lightly to form a stiff mixture.
Shape into eight patties. Coat a pan with the oil and fry the patties for five minutes a side.
SAUCE
Sauté one chopped onion, one grated apple, 1 ml chopped garlic in 5 ml olive oil until onion is transparent.
Add 60 ml tomato sauce, one chopped tomato, 125 ml water, 20 ml brown sugar, 10 ml Worcestershire sauce, 5 ml salt and 10 ml prepared mustard. Simmer for five minutes.
TO SERVE
Place the patties or hamburger rolls (do not spread with butter) along with tomato, lettuce leaves and the barbecue sauce.
