Fish in bacon and cheese sauce

Ingredients (12)

125.00 g bacon — finely chopped
1.00 onion — sliced into rings
2.00 garlic — cloves, crushed
250.00 g mushrooms — sliced
30.00 ml margarine
30.00 ml flour — cake
250.00 ml milk
2.00 ml mustard — powder
salt and freshly ground black pepper
250.00 ml cheddar cheese — grated
3.00 potatoes — boiled until tender and sliced
500.00 g hake fillets

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF). Spray an oven dish with non-stick spray.
Fry the bacon in a pan until crisp. Remove from the pan. Fry the onion and garlic in the pan fat until tender. Remove from the pan and mix with the bacon. Fry the mushrooms until lightly browned and remove from the pan. Melt the margarine and add the cake flour. Stir until smooth and add small quantities of milk while stirring continuously. Heat until the sauce comes to the boil and thickens. Stir continuously.
Add the mustard powder and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from the heat and add the cheese.
Arrange the potatoes in the bottom of the oven dish. Arrange the fish on top and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with the bacon mixture and mushrooms and pour over the cheese sauce.
Cover and bake for 20-30 minutes or until the fish is done and flakes easily with a fork. Remove the cover during the last 10 minutes of cooking time.
Serve with salad.
