Fetty’s Southern style grits (mielie meal)

Grits can be served with savoury meals too; simply omit the sugar and season with fresh cracked black pepper.

Ingredients (5)

1 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup maize meal

Method:

If you can’t find American grits (also called hominy) then mielie meal / pap will do)

In a pot bring the milk, water, salt and sugar to a boil.
Whisk in the grits until well combined.
Bring back to a boil and cook for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add extra milk if the grits become too dry.
When the grits are thick and glossy add the butter.
Taste and adjust for sweetness and richness – add more sugar for sweetness and butter for richness.
Serve immediately in a bowl with a knob of butter on top.
