Method

 
Preheat the oven to 180 ºC (350 ºF). Grease a 26 cm ovenproof pie dish with margarine. Sift the cake flour and baking powder together. Beat the margarine and castor sugar together until light and creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating continuously. Add the cake flour and baking powder and mix well. Add the milk and mix well. Spread two thirds of the batter in the prepared pie dish. Beat the caramel condensed milk and lemon juice and rind until smooth. Mix with the dates and spread over the batter. Spread the remaining batter on top. Combine the cake flour and sugar. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the crumbs over the batter. Bake for 1 hour or until the crust is done and pale brown. Serve hot or cold with cream.
