Brussel sprouts

  • 500
    brussels sprouts
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • pinch nutmeg
  • 4
    rashers bacon
  • 1
    onion, sliced
  • 1
    clove garlic, crushed
  • 2
    slices white bread, crusts removed and cubed
  • oil


Boil the brussels sprouts in salted water until tender. Drain well and arrange in a serving dish. Season with salt and pepper and a little nutmeg. Fry the bacon until crisp. Remove from the pan and break into small pieces. Sauté the onion and garlic in the pan until soft. Sprinkle over the sprouts and the bacon pieces. Fry the bread cubes in oil until browned and scatter over the sprouts. Cover and place in the oven until heated through. Serve with ham pie (see recipe).
